Pastoral Support Worker - Secondary School in South Manchester

An inclusive and welcoming secondary school in South Manchester is looking for a caring and enthusiastic Pastoral Support Worker to join its team from September. This opportunity would suit someone who enjoys supporting young people and wants to make a meaningful difference to students' wellbeing, behaviour, confidence and personal development.

The role could be a great fit for an experienced Pastoral Support Worker, Behaviour Mentor, Learning Mentor, Youth Worker, graduate looking to explore a career in education, or someone with transferable experience working with children or young people. You will have the opportunity to build your experience within a school environment, learn from experienced education professionals and play an important role in supporting students throughout their school journey.

Working closely with students, teachers and the wider pastoral team, you will provide emotional, behavioural and practical support while helping to create a positive school environment where students feel safe, supported and motivated to succeed.

The Role

As a Pastoral Support Worker, you will:

  • Provide pastoral, emotional and behavioural support to students across the school
  • Work with individual students and small groups to support their wellbeing, behaviour and personal development
  • Build positive, trusting and professional relationships with young people
  • Support students in developing confidence, resilience, independence and positive attitudes towards school
  • Help students manage personal, social and emotional challenges that may affect their engagement or behaviour
  • Work closely with teachers and the wider pastoral team to provide appropriate support for individual students
  • Encourage positive behaviour and help students develop strategies to manage their emotions and actions
  • Support students who may be experiencing difficulties with attendance, behaviour, friendships or engagement
  • Monitor student wellbeing and identify concerns that may require additional support
  • Maintain accurate records and communicate relevant information to appropriate members of staff
  • Support students in resolving conflicts and developing positive relationships with their peers
  • Communicate effectively with teachers and, where appropriate, parents and carers
  • Contribute to the school's wider commitment to safeguarding and student wellbeing
About You

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience working with or supporting young people, whether through education, childcare, youth work, mentoring, coaching or a similar environment
  • Be passionate about supporting students' wellbeing, behaviour and personal development
  • Have a patient, calm, positive and approachable personality
  • Be confident supporting young people who may display challenging behaviour or require additional emotional support
  • Be able to build strong, trusting and professional relationships with students
  • Communicate confidently with young people, colleagues and other professionals
  • Be comfortable working independently while also contributing effectively as part of a school team
  • Be reliable, adaptable and enthusiastic about developing your skills
  • Understand the importance of safeguarding and maintaining professional boundaries, or be willing to complete the required training
  • Hold a relevant qualification or degree, although this is desirable rather than essential
