This on-site Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Student role in Net-Zero Aviation Strategies is based in the United Kingdom at The University of Manchester. The candidate will conduct original research on pathways to decarbonize aviation, including technologies, policies, operational strategies, and economic and environmental implications. Day-to-day activities will include designing and executing research studies, collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, reviewing relevant scientific and policy literature, and developing models and scenarios related to net-zero aviation.

The PhD student will prepare publications, conference papers, and reports, and will regularly present findings to academic supervisors, research groups, and external stakeholders. The role also involves engaging with interdisciplinary teams, attending seminars and training, contributing to teaching or supervision where appropriate, and collaborating with industry or policy partners when required.

• Strong research skills, including literature review, research design, data collection, and data analysis.
• Technical and analytical capabilities such as quantitative modeling, systems analysis, or simulation related to energy, transport, or aviation.
• Knowledge or experience in sustainability, climate policy, energy systems, or decarbonization strategies, ideally with relevance to aviation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing academic papers, reports, and presentations.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams, managing time and priorities effectively.
• A relevant master’s or strong bachelor’s degree (e.g., engineering, environmental science, physics, economics, policy, or related field).
