The Stations team within WSP’s Rail business is actively seeking a Principal / Associate Mechanical Engineer to lead teams delivering mechanical building services designs for railway stations and other railway buildings across the UK and around the world.

The role includes all aspects of technical delivery, work‑winning and client engagement with opportunities for onward progression. It offers excellent prospects for the right candidate to enhance their career and deliver some of the most prestigious rail station projects in the UK.

Key responsibilities
  • Produce and supervise high‑quality, industry‑leading building designs.
  • Realise WSP’s and our client’s net‑zero carbon commitments by delivering highly sustainable, low‑carbon design.
  • Share knowledge and technical skills with colleagues from around the globe, becoming part of the wider WSP business.
  • Work in an environment that allows you to use your own initiative with support from specialist experience to deliver high‑quality engineering solutions.
  • Supervise the completion of detailed designs and the work of others in this function, whilst maximising joint learning opportunities for the wider business.
  • Interpret client specification requirements in the development of designs.
  • Design pipework, including heating, cooling, hot and cold water systems.
  • Design ventilation systems, including general ventilation systems.
  • Select plant and equipment items based on designs produced, including but not limited to air‑handling units, fans, pumps, pressurisation units, boilers, heat emitters, chillers, ductwork and ancillary pipework.
  • Have a detailed working knowledge of compliance requirements to Building Regulations, Part L and other MEP sustainable and net‑zero design requirements.

About the team
  • You will work closely with like‑minded individuals on exciting and challenging projects.
  • The rail station MEP team consists of more than 70 mechanical, electrical and public health engineers.
  • You will join a team of professionally qualified, diverse, talented individuals who collaborate to:
    • Undertake project work from early concept through to detail design.
    • Deliver projects for Network Rail, HS2, TfL, Transport for The North, TfGM, Nexus, local authorities, principal contractors and private developers.
Qualifications
  • Experience of mechanical building services design in the rail environment, including heating, cooling, hot and cold water, and ventilation systems.
  • Chartership status with a UK Engineering Institution.
  • Understanding of:
    • The requirements of Network Rail and/or London Underground standards.
    • The design of controls/BMS for mechanical systems.
    • The design of above‑ground plumbing and waste systems, rainwater disposal systems, and drainage systems.
