Role descriptionWe are actively recruiting for a Consultant and/or Senior Consultant to join our growing Fire Engineering team in the UK. The position involves undertaking Fire Safety Engineering work, including supporting design projects within and outside the UK. The role will mainly involve desktop reviews of design projects at initial stages and supporting the fire safety discipline at Arcadis.
The applicant will work predominantly within the building sector, with opportunities to support other sectors such as rail projects, reflecting Arcadis’ multidisciplinary nature and range of client services.
Role accountabilities- Develop Fire Safety Strategy reports.
- Perform Means of Escape analysis, including evacuation time calculations, escape route and exit width assessment, travel distance evaluation, and evacuation strategy planning.
- Assess and understand the main British Fire Safety Regulations and Standards applied to buildings, such as Approved Document B (AD
B), BS9999, BS7974, BS9991, BB100, HTM 05, etc. - Assess and understand the main British fire safety legislation and standards applied to rail projects, including London Underground standards, Network Rail standards (e.g., LUL – S1371, Railway Safety Principles and Guidance [RSPG], BS9992).
- Interpret and apply fire safety documents and Codes of Practice, including international NFPA standards (e.g., NFPA 101, NFPA 130).
- Conduct Third‑Party Review/Design Verification.
- Attend internal design team meetings.
- Attend external design team meetings with clients, providing initial supervision.
- Support the development of Fire Risk Assessment reports for both building and rail sectors.
- Hazard Identification.
- Understanding of As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP).
- Knowledge of PAS 9980, EWS1 forms, and Façade Engineering.
- Familiarity with the Building Safety Act 2022.
- Knowledge of Fire Risk Assessment principles.
- Understanding of fire dynamics, heat transfer, and smoke behaviour in enclosed environments, especially undergrounds and tunnels.
- Basic knowledge of Active Fire Protection (AFP) systems and Passive Fire Protection (PFP) measures.
- Experience with fire modelling simulation using zone models such as CFAST and CFD-based models such as FDS, Pyro Sim, SMARTFIRE.
- Strong experience in fire safety engineering.
- Suitable engineering degree (e.g., Fire Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Architecture, or other numerate disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Maths) from a recognised university.
- Qualifications recognised by a professional engineering body; aspiration to attain full membership.
- Ideally a Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership.
- Capability to work independently on tasks while contributing to a team environment.
- Willingness to take on challenges and support other experts within the team when needed.
- Ability to help prepare proposals and marketing material related to Fire Safety capabilities.
