Information Officer (Information Rights)

Grade 6 | Information Governance

Location:
Hybrid (Manchester-based)

We are seeking a motivated and collaborative individual to join our team as an Information Officer (Information Rights). This role sits at the heart of fairness, transparency, and trust at the University of Manchester. You will support individuals to exercise their rights, enable openness through Freedom of Information, and help ensure the University meets its legal and ethical responsibilities.

This is a high-impact role where your professional judgement will shape how complex and sensitive information is handled across the institution.

About the role

You will manage a varied caseload of Subject Access Requests (SARs) and Freedom of Information (FOI) requests from end to end.

You will be responsible for:

  • Managing SARs and FOI requests, ensuring compliance with legal and statutory requirements
  • Identifying, retrieving, reviewing, and redacting information as appropriate
  • Producing clear, accurate, and defensible responses
  • Applying proportionate judgement to determine search scope and decision-making
  • Working collaboratively with stakeholders across the University

The role focuses on analytical thinking, decision‑making, and communication rather than high-volume data processing. You will also use digital tools, including Microsoft Copilot, to support efficient and targeted information retrieval.

As a trauma‑exposed role, structured support, supervision, and workload management are in place to support wellbeing.

About you

We encourage applications from individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. You should demonstrate:

Essential qualifications
  • Experience handling information rights requests (e.g. SARs or FOI), or applying relevant legislation
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a deadline‑driven environment
  • Strong written communication and analytical skills
  • Sound judgement and attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively and engage a wide range of stakeholders
  • Experience handling sensitive or potentially distressing information
Desirable qualifications
  • Knowledge of UK GDPR or FOI legislation
  • Relevant professional qualifications (e.g. BCS, IAPP or equivalent)

We welcome candidates who may not meet every requirement but can demonstrate relevant skills and potential.

About the team and environment

You will join the Information Governance Office within the Directorate of Compliance and Risk, working closely with Legal Affairs, the Data Protection Officer, and colleagues across the University.

We are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive environment, with structured wellbeing support, collaborative working, and opportunities for professional development.
