Main duties of the job

Community Diagnostic Centres provide a broad range of elective diagnostics (such as checks, scans and tests) away from major hospital sites such as the Manchester Royal Infirmary. The MTCDC will be open from 8am to 8.30pm, Monday to Sunday and the HSDA cover a seven-day shift pattern in order to provide an effective and efficient service to the Centre.

Job responsibilities
  • Assist in the promotion of and participate in the smooth running of the CDC in conjunction with the CDC clinical and leadership teams, providing an efficient and welcoming service.
  • Assist in the preparation of patients notes and relevant charts/documentation prior to, and on attendance to the department.
  • Take recordings of patient height and weight; measuring and documenting patient observations (BP electronic and manual measurement, TPR, RBS, HbA1c, BMI calculation).
  • Deliver a high standard of care whilst cannulating and/or taking bloods from a diverse caseload of adult and paediatric patients, without direct supervision.
  • Prepare and maintain environments for clinical procedures. Ensure that the examination rooms are kept clean and tidy, maintaining adequate supplies of linen, gowns and consumables, liaising with appropriate stock suppliers within the Trust.
  • Aid qualified staff before, during and after diagnostic examinations undertaken in the CDC. Undertake diagnostic tests independently or under supervision, as appropriate.
  • Chaperone and escort patients between various areas to support bundled testing protocols.
  • Support the patient journey by explaining procedures, providing reassurance and reporting any problems to the clinical team.
  • Assist patients in their mobility requirements, help move and position appropriately to maximise their physical comfort, utilising equipment when trained to use and as directed by clinical staff.
  • Prepare individual patients and the environment to ensure effective movement and/or handling procedures, to ensure patient and staff safety.
  • Undertake preparation and clearance of sterile trolleys for interventional procedures.
  • Assist in the admission and recovery of endoscopy patients, and complete documentation pre and post procedure.
  • Undertake administrative duties as directed by the clinical teams in relation to all verbal and written communications, ensuring messages and communications are passed to other team members, as required.
  • Promote standards of health and safety in working practice and the workplace, by being responsible for self and others through identifying risks, undertaking work activities in a safe manner.
  • Use a range of techniques for infection prevention and control including waste management, hand washing and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Report to the clinical team any alterations in patients condition or changing circumstances and any environmental issues.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the work environment in line with Trust Health and Safety and Infection Prevention Practice policies.
  • Organise the supply and maintenance of materials and equipment, ensuring they are placed in the correct area and present no hazard to staff, patients and visitors.
  • Assist CDC Senior Staff with the administration of the annual NHS England Experience Based Design Patient Surveys.
  • Complete daily resuscitation equipment and room temperature checks and tests.
  • Complete weekly fire safety checks.
  • Comply with all departmental and Trust Policies including confidentiality and management instructions regarding Health and Safety and Fire Prevention to protect the individual and their colleagues.
  • Undertake any other duties as requested by the Line Manager or other senior staff to ensure the smooth running of the Department.
  • Person Specification Qualifications
    • Recognised educational standard in Maths and English
    • Level 3 (NVQ or Apprenticeship) in Clinical Healthcare or demonstrable equivalent knowledge, skills and experience
    • Information Technology or Microsoft Office qualification
    Experience
    • Experience of working in a healthcare setting, undertaking a variety of clinical tasks
    • Experience of phlebotomy and/or cannulation
    • Experience of providing hands‑on patient care
    • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team
    • Experience of working unsupervised for short to medium periods of time
    Skills/Abilities
    • A high standard of computer literacy
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to deal with a wide range of NHS patients, colleagues and wider teams of Trust staff using tact, empathy and negotiation skills
    • Ability to use initiative in planning daily tasks
    • Ability to demonstrate high standards of competence in a variety of general and clinical skills within the scope of the role following appropriate training and assessment
    • Ability to work both independently and under supervision in the delivery of patient care
    • Knowledge of infection control and safeguarding processes
