The Specialist Midwife:
Drugs/Alcohol/Mental Health (Band
6) is a key member of the Saint Mary's Managed Clinical Service, providing high-quality, evidence-based care to women with complex needs relating to substance misuse, alcohol use, and perinatal mental health.
The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of compassionate, safe and holistic midwifery care throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period. Working closely with the Band 7 Specialist Midwife, the role supports the coordination and effective management of a specialist clinical caseload, ensuring that high standards of care, safeguarding responsibilities, and multidisciplinary collaboration are maintained.
The role requires strong clinical knowledge of the specialist area, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to reducing health inequalities for this vulnerable patient group. The post holder will act as a role model, provide specialist advice, and contribute to service development, education and audit.
Provide specialist midwifery assessment and evidence-based care planning for women with drug, alcohol and mental health needs.
Develop personalised care plans and ensure information is shared sensitively to support informed decision-making.
Deliver direct clinical care with a strong understanding of the specialist needs of the caseload.
Support the Band 7 Specialist Midwife in coordinating the specialist service and deputise as required.
Maintain high standards of documentation, communication and referral pathways with internal teams and external agencies.
Act as a visible clinical role model and resource for staff, patients and carers.
Work in partnership with safeguarding teams, social care, voluntary agencies and multidisciplinary partners to ensure safe, integrated care.
Contribute to service improvements, clinical audit, research, and the development of guidelines and protocols.
Support education, mentorship, supervision and training for students and staff.
Promote an evidence-based, patient-centred culture and contribute to the ongoing development of the specialist service.
