Position: Information Governance Officer (Technical)

We are seeking a motivated and collaborative individual to join our team as an Information Governance Officer (Technical). This role offers an exciting opportunity to support major digital transformation programmes across the University, working at the intersection of information governance, data protection and technology.

Based within the Information Governance Office in the Directorate of Compliance and Risk, you will play a key role in ensuring that information governance, security and records management requirements are embedded into the design and delivery of digital systems. You will work closely with IT Services, programme teams and technical specialists to help deliver secure, compliant and fit‑for‑purpose solutions in a complex and evolving environment.

This is a Grade 7, fixed‑term role for 12 months.

Responsibilities
  • Supporting major digital programmes and projects by identifying and managing information governance risks
  • Delivering Information Governance Risk Reviews (IGRRs) across systems and services
  • Assessing system architectures, identity models, access controls and data flows, and recommending proportionate mitigations
  • Working with IT Services, including Security Architecture and Identity and Access Management teams, to embed governance and security requirements
  • Providing advice on data governance, classification, retention and lawful processing, and contributing to governance documentation and audit evidence
Essential Criteria
  • Experience applying information governance or data protection principles in technical, digital or system‑based environments
  • Experience supporting or delivering risk assessments, DPIAs or assurance activities
  • Experience working with digital transformation programmes, IT systems or identity and access management services
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify information risk and propose practical, proportionate solutions
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical teams and diverse stakeholders
Desirable Criteria
  • Knowledge of data protection legislation
  • Relevant technical or professional certifications (e.g. CompTIA, BCS, IAPP or equivalent experience)
  • Experience producing structured, defensible governance or assurance documentation
Benefits
  • Generous employer pension contribution
  • 29 days annual leave plus bank holidays, along with Christmas closure
  • Access to flexible working arrangements and professional development opportunities

We welcome candidates who bring diverse perspectives, experiences, and approaches to their work. We value sound judgement, curiosity and a collaborative approach as much as formal qualifications.
