Job Description

Main Requirements
- Full UK driver’s licence and access to own vehicle.
- Current, valid Enhanced CRB clearance.
- References to verify interpreting and translation experience.
- Fluency in English and cultural competence, and fluency in your native language(s).
Role of an Interpreter & Translator
Consecutive interpretation is required in this role with the interpreter in close proximity to the speaker converting one language to another. Everything that is said must be interpreted in the manner said with no omission or addition.
Translators are required in various industries to work across documents including scientific, legal and literary, ensuring the original meaning is conveyed as accurately as possible. An excellent command of two or more languages is generally required.
Interpretation responsibilities
Please note:
Interpreters will only be allowed to interpret in their native language.
- Comfortably handle settings such as Mental Health, GP, Hospital, Dental, Police, Court/Criminal Justice, Local Authorities, Schools, Councils, Solicitors, education, health and social services sectors.
- Interpret verbal communications in real‑time, paying careful attention to context, tone and technical terminology.
- Consult reference works to stay updated on terminology and acquire specialist knowledge when needed.
- Attend booked assignments and drive to and from assignments.
- Adhere to high professional standards, maintain confidentiality and follow the Interpreter Code of Conduct(s) set out by NRPSI, IOL, ATC and ITI.
- Participate in projects such as community engagement, outreach and feedback collection.
Qualifications
- MA in Interpreting / Translation / Linguistics
- BA in Interpreting / Translation / Linguistics
- DPSI – Diploma in Public Services Interpreting
- Community Interpreting Certificate – Level 3
- Other equivalent UK & overseas interpreting qualifications
INTERPRETING
- Minimum one year’s professional experience, with references.
- Minimum 200 hours of previous interpreting experience, ideally in the public sector.
- At least two references for completed projects in medical, legal, etc. specialisms.

- In‑depth knowledge of the culture(s) related to the languages used.
- Subject‑matter expertise and knowledge of relevant communities.
- Knowledge of current affairs, politics, cultures and customs of the non‑English language.
- Adherence to Ethnic Health office procedures.
- Recognition of Equality and Diversity and commitment to human rights, acting in accordance with legislation, policies and procedures.
- Understanding and ability to work within the Language Empire Code of Conduct.
