Job Summary
An opportunity has opened as a Project Manager working across two of our research themes (Dermatology and Integrative Cardiovascular Medicine) which are part of the Inflammation Cluster in the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). You will work across these two themes, splitting your time equally. You will be an essential member of our cross‑disciplinary and Greater Manchester‑wide team, responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring progress, using multiple systems and processes to manage BRC research projects and programmes of work and financial expenditure.
With a keen eye for detail, you will identify risks and ensure that appropriate mitigation is applied to ensure that quality standards are met and projects are delivered on time and to budget to meet the BRC objectives and NIHR contractual obligations. You will play a crucial role in fostering the development of new collaborations within the BRC partnership as well as with external stakeholders.
duties
- Drive delivery of BRC objectives across Themes and Clusters by developing and implementing robust processes and systems required to ensure high‑quality project management.
- Provide accurate, timely and high‑quality reports on project progress and outputs against forecasts and strategic aims both internally (including to the BRC senior management team) and to external bodies (including the NIHR).
- Work with theme/cluster leads, programme leads and key researchers to identify and overcome risks to ensure successful delivery of the theme objectives.
- Work with senior research staff within the partner Trusts and University, with the R&I Management Team and with other internal partners (e.g. finance, CRFs) and external partners (including local SMEs, multinational companies, charities, other BRCs and Trusts) to identify and progress collaborations and develop and deliver projects which add value to the BRC.
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience gained in a work environment.
- Post Graduate Diploma or equivalent in work experience.
- Evidence of continued professional development.
- MSc or further qualifications in Health Research or equivalent experience.
- Formal project management qualification e.g. PRINCE

- Knowledge of NHS and/or University research.
- Experience of developing and maintaining comprehensive and systematic systems for collecting and processing project information.
- Experience of managing budgets and liaising with finance staff.
- Experience of writing a range of high‑quality reports, strategy documents and grant applications.
- Recent experience of line management including completing PDRs; experience of supporting and developing junior staff.
- Recent experience of working in both a university and NHS research setting.
- Knowledge of NHS and/or University funding and project management systems.
- Experience of delivering training to junior staff.
- Significant experience of leading and managing a number of projects simultaneously from inception through to completion and evaluation, with demonstrable focus on delivery of outputs/targets.
- Experience of successful working with a range of internal and external stakeholders to manage project delivery.
- Experience of developing and delivering collaborative projects between multiple organisations/stakeholders.
- Experience of analysing complex data to assess risk and monitor progress against plans, managing deviations and issues appropriately to ensure successful project delivery.
- GCP trained.
- Experience of using software and online tools related to research outputs (e.g. MIMAS Web of Knowledge, ISI Journal Citation index, Scopus, Zotero, Endnote).
- Experience of working and/or liaising with industry.
- Experience in bringing about and managing change.
