Role Overview

Are you looking for a new challenge? Do you want to make a difference to the lives of children and young people with epilepsy? An exciting opportunity for a paediatric registered nurse (band
6) who has experience/interest in long term conditions to join the children's epilepsy team. The team is dedicated to children, young people who have a diagnosis of epilepsy and their families. We currently provide a 5‑day service 8‑6 pm City Wide, with current bases at Longsight Health Centre and Charlestown Health Centre.

The role is a 37.5‑hour post; flexible working can be discussed  post holder will work as part of this team ensuring the delivery of high‑quality health care, education and support to children and families within the home, school and in various community settings. You should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to demonstrate sound evidence‑based knowledge. You must have a full driving licence and access to a car.

Qualifications
  • Registered sick children’s nurse / RN child
  • Teaching and assessing experience
  • Relevant degree level education / specialist practitioner CCN
  • Experience working with children and young people with long‑term conditions / complex health care condition in the community setting. Demonstrate an understanding and application of family‑centred care and improving self‑management through comprehensive care planning.
  • Minimum of 3 years post registration.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development Leadership.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and in an autonomous manner.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Car owner / driver.

Responsibilities

To support the team leader and Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) in the management of a caseload. This will include the assessment and delivery of care needs, and the development and evaluation of programmes of care for children and young people who have a confirmed diagnosis of epilepsy.

To act up in the absence of the team leader / caseload holder and be responsible for maintaining agreed policies and clinical standards in accordance with agreed criteria.

Assist in the development of the management and development of a designated area of practice in conjunction with the team leader.

Clinical Functions
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of epilepsy care in accordance with the Trust’s agreed clinical standards.
  • Provide education and information to the child / young person and their families / carers around epilepsy‑related issues including individualised management plans; safety; lifestyle choices; education; social impacts.
  • To promote clinical excellence through the principles of the Trust’s philosophy.
  • To support the team leader in ensuring the compliance of quality assurance initiatives.
  • To participate in the identification of the health needs of the child and young person nursed in the community and to work in close liaison with other health care and multi‑agency workers to adopt a multi‑disciplinary approach to health care.
  • To work closely with hospital colleagues to create seamless care.
  • To develop the role of the Children’s Epilepsy Nurse Specialist in accordance with the needs of the client group, the service and the NMC.
  • To be responsible for a defined area of practice as agreed by the team leader / manager.
  • Prescribe treatment for children and young people with epilepsy within their clinical competence, relevant qualification and the remit of the service.
  • To involve parents, carers, children and young people and encourage them to make informed choices concerning their health and wellbeing.
