On Ward 4 we are looking for a caring, compassionate and motivated individual to join our team. Ward 4 is an acute medical Oncology ward, which specialises in caring for patients with Altered Airways, based within one of the leading cancer centres in Europe. We are committed to providing exemplary patient care and a collaborative team approach.
Main duties of the job
We ensure that you are prepared to start your career with us by offering an 8‑week supernumerary period supported by a clinical practice facilitator and a designated sister/charge nurse for added guidance.
The role as staff nurse on Ward 4 includes:
- Managing acutely unwell patients
- Providing specialist oncological nursing interventions
- Recognising deterioration in patients’ condition at an early stage
- Progressing within cancer care and undertaking specialist training such as UKONs chemotherapy training
- Providing palliative and end‑of‑life care
- Educating patients
- Liaising with the MDT and advocating for patients
- Effectively communicating with patients and relatives
- Maintaining clear, accurate documentation
- Acting as a proactive team player
- Keeping up to date with current guidance and implementing evidence‑based practice
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As part of the ward team, help achieve and maintain a high standard of patient care.Welcome patients and introduce them to the ward routine.Undertake the nursing care of patients, ensuring privacy and dignity while addressing physical and psychological needs.Be aware of the needs of relatives and provide support and advice.Take individual responsibility for the nursing care of a group of patients as a registered nurse.Participate in the rehabilitation of patients and give relatives necessary instructions.Ensure prescribed drugs and treatments are given correctly and in accordance with Hospital Procedure and Policy, and work within NMC guidelines.Follow procedures when notifying relatives of seriously ill patients and those who have died.Liaise with medical, paramedical personnel and community organisations.Participate in internal rotation to night duty as required.Regularly attend team meetings to remain updated on changes within the ward and Trust.Manage and generally supervise the ward in the absence of senior staff.Provide a supportive role within the ward for nursing, medical and clerical staff.Give a clear and accurate update at change of duties and ensure accurate documentation of nursing interventions.Participate in the emergency/continuing care of patients and give any necessary instructions, including transfer information.Participate in nursing procedures appropriate to the ward.Support and assist in the induction/training of junior staff and health care assistants, acting as a mentor to designated staff.Act as ward co‑ordinator and ensure safe and timely throughput of patients, liaising closely with admission staff, medical staff and other wards.Liaise with medical and paramedical personnel and community organisations.Highlight areas of improvement/development within the department and undertake relevant projects.Participate in ward/unit/Trust initiatives, e.g., Productive Ward.Act as support for other ward nurses in relation to acute emergency care.Safely escort patients to other areas and act as an escort for patients during transfer to other departments/hospitals as required.Assist in the provision of meals/refreshments for patients while meeting their nutritional needs.Assist in the general housekeeping duties of the ward.Help maintain a safe environment and report faults/risks to the nurse in charge.Liaise with staff responsible for stores/stationery and ordering, and assist in the maintenance of stock levels.Handle patients’ personal possessions, ensuring cash and valuables are kept securely as per policy.Ensure correct care and custody of controlled drugs and aid the safe storage of medicines, in line with Trust policies.Assist medical staff with…
