Detailed job description and main responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities
  • Act as a clinical expert in critical care and in use of critical care monitoring/therapeutic equipment within the clinical area.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and patients and carers/relatives within the clinical setting using effective strategies to overcome barriers to communication.
  • Utilise and respond to sensitive information appropriately.
  • Work collaboratively with the multi professional team to ensure patient's needs are met.
  • Actively promote and monitor the safety, wellbeing and interests of the patients, staff and visitors to the clinical area.
  • Maintain high clinical profile and facilitate the application of theory to practice.
  • Maintain accurate legible and timely written/verbal/electronic reports which inform other members of the team, patients and their carers/relatives.
  • Be aware of current research associated with critical care practice and utilise same in ensuring evidence-based practice at local level.
  • Act as a patient advocate in promoting and delivering the highest standard of nursing care.
  • Prevent the spread of infection by adopting measures appropriate to the situation, and participating in the education of staff, patients and carer's
  • Comply with policies for the correct disposal of clinical and other waste, sharps, soiled linen, and ensure all staff adhere to these policies
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness
  • Be involved in the continuous raising of awareness of infection control issues with all members of the multi professional team, visitors and carers.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain own professional status and ensure that the NMC requirements for registration are met and adhered to.
  • Ensure all relevant nursing policies, procedures and guidelines are adhered to.
  • Participate in directorate and intensive care meetings as required
  • Maintain a safe environment for yourself and others, taking reasonable care to avoid injury. Co-operate with the Trust to meet statutory requirements.
  • Provide statements regarding untoward incidents, as requested by the Senior Nurse
  • Ensure all staff attend Trust mandatory training annually
  • Maintain registration and nursing competencies, and comply with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, and related documents.
Quality
  • Contribute to Clinical Governance, NHSLA and Research & development initiatives
  • Maintain a professional approach to staff, patients, visitors and colleagues, treating all with dignity and respect.
  • Network with other areas to ensure learning opportunities are maximised
  • Promote the use of information technology to improve and inform practice
  • Maintain a safe environment for yourself and others, taking reasonable care to avoid injury. Co-operate with the Trust to meet statutory requirements
  • Provide statements regarding untoward incidents, as requested by the Senior Nurse

  • Support and contribute to the development of quality improvement strategies with Critical Care Support and contribute and effective use of physical and financial resources.
  • Communicate with senior management team, service users and other multi professional trust/regional groups regarding educational initiatives, programmes and future plans and developments.
Research
  • Contribute to the improvement of patient care through the clinical governance framework and participate in the development of standard, benchmarking, audit and research.
