Postgraduate Research (PhD) Opportunities in Science and Engineering

The University of Manchester invites applications for Postgraduate Research (PhD) programmes within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. These programmes provide an opportunity to undertake advanced, independent research across a wide range of disciplines including engineering, computer science, materials science, mathematics, and related fields.

The application process is designed to support prospective researchers in identifying suitable research areas and supervisors, developing a strong research proposal, and submitting a competitive application. Candidates are encouraged to explore available research groups and align their interests with ongoing projects within the Faculty. Applications are assessed based on academic merit, research potential, and alignment with departmental expertise.

Successful applicants will join a vibrant and diverse research community, gaining access to world-class facilities, expert supervision, and professional development opportunities. Doctoral researchers are expected to contribute to the advancement of knowledge through original research, participate in academic training activities, and disseminate their findings through publications and presentations.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a first-class or upper second-class honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant discipline. In many cases, a relevant Master’s degree is preferred. International applicants must meet the University’s English language requirements.

Required expertise/skills
Candidates should demonstrate strong academic performance, research aptitude, and a clear interest in their chosen field of study. The ability to develop a well-structured research proposal, critical thinking skills, and the capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively are essential. Good communication skills and a commitment to academic research are required.
