Would you like to support Greater Manchester’s environment work, contributing towards a greener and fairer city-region?

We are looking for a Lead Analyst to join the GMCA Research Team, working on our environment research programme. Your work will help us deliver against the Greater Manchester Five-Year Environment Plan and the Greater Manchester Strategy (GMS), which both set ambitious targets, including for the city-region to achieve carbon neutrality by 2038, and to improve nature and biodiversity

Your work will be varied but will include working with a range of data across different programmes of work, particularly around developing our work on climate adaptation and nature recovery. You are also likely to be undertaking spaital analysis and GIS mapping work across the environment activity, including natural environment and low carbon, as well as wider research into how the environment connects with other key policy areas.

Alongside the environment-specific focus of this role, as a member of the wider GMCA Research Team, you will join a team of other Analysts, Lead Analysts and Principals with opportunities to collaborate on cross-thematic projects.

Recent work of the sub-team has included:

• developing and reporting against the Five-Year Environment Plan, including developing a suite of dashboards;
• undertaking a climate impacts assessment and a climate change risk assessment in preparation for the development of a climate adaptation strategy;
• commissioning the development of a carbon emissions pathway toolkit to help inform the refresh of the Five-Year Environment Plan

The Lead Analyst Role Profile is structured against a progression framework that allows Lead Analysts to progress from Grades 6 to 8. Our expectation is to recruit at Grade 6 (£34,434 - £38,220), but candidates who meet the requirements of the progression framework at Grade 7/8 will be considered, dependent on the skills, knowledge and experience that they demonstrate against the key aspects of the role as detailed below.

We are looking for someone who can show us they:

• have experience of undertaking research and analysis, including delivering research projects,
• confidence in sourcing, analysing and presenting complex information to specialist and non-specialist audiences
• have strong analytical skills, with evidence of working with complex quantitative data sets, including data visualisation skills (potentially including experience using dashboards, and coding).
• have experience working with spatial data, and GIS platforms (ArcGIS/ESRI preferable, but not essential).
• may have knowledge of, or experience with qualitative data (including but not limited to focus groups, interviews, community engagement)
• excellent writing and presentation abilities (including presenting technical material to non-technical audiences)
• an understanding of how data and evidence can be used to inform policy and delivery, and how to maximise insight and intelligence from your research
• strong interpersonal skills to work with various stakeholders, internally and externally
• an awareness of the political landscape of Greater Manchester both locally and nationally.
• an eagerness to learn new techniques and approaches you are self-motivated and able to use your own initiative to take work forward.
• a commitment to equality and diversity, both within your work, and the wider workplace.

This experience may come from previous work experience, lived experience, or academic study. Candidates are likely to have prior experience working in a related field, such as (but not limited to) environment, energy, transport, or sustainable lifestyles.
