Salford City Council strives to ensure that as many of our young people as possible become independent adults who can access their local community. Travel training can build confidence, self‑esteem and feelings of true independence. It helps make the young person feel part of their local community. Travel training builds skills for life through feeling in control and widening opportunities such as greater access to education, training, employment, leisure and social networks.

We currently have an exciting vacancy to enable us to continue to build on our success and bring new experience, knowledge and ideas into the team. This role will be term‑time only.

Provide SEND students in Salford with the necessary skills required to travel independently and support their transition to adulthood. Be responsible for implementing and developing an independent travel training programme, engaging with local education providers, assessing referrals to the service and working directly with young people and their families, undertaking journeys with them to/from a local school or college. Deliver Independent Travel Training by providing appropriate road safety and bus awareness training and support for clients with special needs.

Act as an independence champion for children and young people, giving time and expertise to undertake meaningful conversations with children and families, colleagues, and partners to promote the benefits of independent travel training.

Please be aware that this post is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and that you will be required to meet the cost of the DBS check currently £49.50. The payment for this will be deducted from your first four months’ salary payments at a rate of £12.38 per month. If you do not commence employment for any reason but the DBS has been processed, you will be sent an invoice for the payment of £49.50.

Your style and approach will reflect our values: you will be passionate about what you do, with relevant experience of working with young people, preferably within an education or training capacity. You will be able to assess, plan, implement and deliver independent training to young people with SEND and apply good practical knowledge and experience using creativity and initiative to effectively communicate and engage with young people, parents, schools, colleges and others.

Working mainly without supervision you will enjoy taking personal responsibility to resolve issues and change what you do and how you do it to make a difference for the users of the service.
