Job Summary

Working within the Data Engineering team which delivers and maintains data transfer pipelines between clinical/operational source systems and the Christie Central Data Repository (CCDR) enabling the delivery of high-quality business and complex clinical reporting structures from disparate systems. We are seeking an experienced Data Architect with a strong background in data modelling and extensive experience of modern mainstream data platforms. This role will support the Data Engineering modernisation programme focused on automating data integration and building robust data solutions, and the Joint Analytics for Cancer, a flagship initiative to unlock the full potential of oncology data at The Christie.

The Christie supports flexible working and is proud to be a diverse and inclusive organisation. Previous experience of working for the NHS or in a healthcare environment is not essential for this role.

24‑month fixed term. The role can be home or office based but requires attendance at the office one day a week and for specific meetings or occasions.

Main Duties of the Job

Responsible for planning, design, and delivery of Data Management architecture and associated products and services.

  • The post holder will play a key role in shaping the role and services provided by the Data Engineering team.
  • The post holder will lead on the planning and development of the necessary architecture, tools, and resources to handle high variety, volume, and velocity data sets.
  • Provide highly specialised advice and guidance on data ingestion, orchestration, modelling, data mining, cloud services, and the development of unstructured health‑related data sets and information.
  • Support the data management programme, ensuring the development is carried out as a cross‑functional team effort with defined roles and responsibilities.
  • Respond to sudden unexpected demands, such as providing guidance and specialist technical skills to enable new returns at national level or addressing a clinical need within the locality, while managing existing competing pressures.
  • Support remediation and recovery activities, identify and address under‑performing delivery aspects, and provide guidance to operational teams to bring them back on track.
  • Advise on the identification and acquisition of diverse data sets from a range of internal and disparate public sources.
  • Advise on the specification and development of processes for highly complex datasets using a wide‑ranging technical and analytical skill‑set.
  • Advise on the automation and scheduling of the extraction and processing of large and complex data sets across distributed platforms.
  • Support Trust software development requirements for data‑driven services and act as a specialist on data integration and enterprise data architecture.
  • Promote the integrity and governance of the data extracted and held in Trust systems.
  • Tutor and support colleagues in appropriate scripting, modelling, and other techniques for the new data platform.
  • Work collaboratively with analysts and service leads to support their local requirements and meet the business needs of the organisation.
  • Ensure thorough documentation and change control processes are in place, accessible and maintained for all processes and developments.
  • Comply with all legal, regulatory and Trust requirements.
  • Undertake other duties as required, commensurate with the post.
Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent qualification and / or relevant experience.
  • In depth experience of at least one mainstream modern data platform.
  • Experience of working with and manipulating large relational datasets.
  • Implementation of a data warehouse solution.
  • Experience of working with unstructured data.
  • Specialist understanding and application of data architecture principles and strategy.
  • Understanding of cloud data management platforms and services.
  • Evidence of continuing professional and personal development.
  • Travel to Christie managed sites as necessary.
  • Ability to undertake work out‑of‑hours, on weekends and public holidays as required by exception.
