Full Stack Software Engineer (National Security)
Location: Manchester with access to multiple UK sites
Salary: £50,000 – £85,000 depending on experience and SFIA grading
Clearance: Active SC clearance required
The OpportunityYou’ll be joining an engineering‑led organisation working within UK National Security and Defence. The focus is on delivering systems that support real‑world operations, where performance, security and reliability all matter.
This is an R&D‑style environment rather than a traditional consultancy. Engineers are given space to solve problems properly, with less rigidity and more ownership over how systems are designed and built.
You’ll be part of small, multidisciplinary teams, but with access to a wider engineering network across multiple UK sites. There is a strong culture of collaboration and cross‑pollination between teams, giving you exposure to different domains, technologies and ways of working.
There is a clear focus on long‑term development, with opportunities to move between projects, progress your career, and take courses to expand your skill set.
The RoleYou’ll work as a full‑stack engineer across the full development lifecycle, contributing to systems operating in complex and high‑assurance environments. The role involves building both user‑facing applications and the backend services that support them.
You’ll collaborate closely with engineers and stakeholders, contributing to both delivery and design.
Responsibilities include:- Developing full‑stack applications using Type Script (React) alongside backend services in Python and Go
- Designing and building APIs and microservices within distributed systems
- Deploying and managing applications using Kubernetes and Docker
- Contributing to CI/CD pipelines to enable consistent and reliable delivery
- Working across frontend and backend components to deliver end‑to‑end features
- Collaborating with teams across multiple sites to share knowledge and approaches
- You’ll likely have experience with JavaScript or Type Script alongside at least one backend language such as Python or Go.
- Experience with Kubernetes is beneficial, but not essential.
The focus is on your ability to work across the stack and adapt to different problem spaces. This is not a narrowly defined role, and you’ll have the opportunity to broaden your skill set over time.
Security RequirementsDue to the nature of the work, candidates must hold active SC clearance and be eligible for the highest levels of UK security vetting. This typically requires sole UK nationality and long‑term UK residency.
