Software Architect (AWS | Agentic Systems) | Hybrid Manchester | £70k DOE Overview A client of ours is seeking a Software Architect to take full ownership of the architecture for a high-scale, real-time platform currently being rebuilt on a modern AWS stack. The business is adopting an agentic-first delivery model, where AI agents contribute meaningfully alongside a small, senior engineering team.

This is a system-defining role, not a ticket-reviewing position. You will set the architectural direction, standards, and guardrails that enable fast, consistent delivery without drift. The Opportunity You will play a key role in shaping how a modern platform is designed, built, and scaled in an environment where AI-assisted development is a core part of the delivery model. The focus is on creating systems that are robust, adaptable, and capable of handling high-throughput, bursty demand.

Key Responsibilities Own and define the overall system architecture across AWS, including core services and serverless components for asynchronous workloads. Design high-volume, high-performance data-access layers to support real-time demand. Establish technical standards, patterns, and architectural boundaries, ensuring they are enforced through CI and automation. Lead solution design and ensure a strong definition-of-ready before development begins. Continuously evolve the architecture to support scaling without requiring re-platforming.

Collaborate on the evaluation and governance of AI-generated code and agent-driven system interactions. Technology Environment Type Script, NestJS, and AWS form the core stack. Infrastructure includes containerised services, serverless functions, managed databases, caching layers, and CDN capabilities. A strong emphasis is placed on high-throughput data design, performance optimisation, and CI-enforced architectural consistency. What They Are Looking For Proven experience defining architecture and engineering standards for complex systems.

Deep understanding of high-throughput data environments, including caching, read scaling, partitioning, and storage selection. Experience implementing guardrails that teams follow, ideally enforced through automation. Strong background in AWS and modern backend engineering practices. Comfortable working in environments where AI contributes significantly to code and delivery.

Desirable Experience

Experience with AI-assisted or agent-driven development environments. Background in real-time or high-demand platforms such as marketplaces. Understanding of testing and evaluation approaches for non-deterministic systems. Ability to design systems that remain flexible and easy to evolve over time.
