Position Details

Job Summary
- This position supervises and participates in the activities of assigned Fire Department personnel.
Major Duties
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents; establishes command until relieved by a superior officer; develops and initiates initial action plans; supervises and directs personnel in a safe, effective, and efficient manner.
- Assists in the determination of fire origins by preserving evidence and securing scenes.
- Trains, assigns, directs, schedules, supervises, evaluates and disciplines assigned personnel; prepares, schedules, and makes daily work assignments.
- Coordinates and participates in fire prevention activities, including fire inspections, pre-planning, public education, and fire hydrant testing.
- Directs the maintenance of station grounds, equipment, and apparatus; conducts inspections to ensure operational readiness.
- Prepares a variety of regular and special reports; reviews reports completed by subordinates for accuracy and completeness.
- Instructs and drills staff in the operation of apparatus and equipment and in the performance of other emergency and non-emergency duties.
- Completes required training and maintains required certifications.
- Performs related duties.
Knowledge Required by the Position
- Knowledge of fire prevention and suppression standards, practices, strategies, tactics, and apparatus.
- Knowledge of National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and International Code Council (ICC) standards.
- Knowledge of incident command principles and practices.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal fire codes, local ordinances, and departmental rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of personnel management principles.
- Skill in management and supervision under both routine and emergency situations.
- Skill in decision making and problem solving under routine and emergency conditions.
- Skill in the operation and use of fire equipment and apparatus.
- Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Complexity/Scope of Work
- The work consists of varied administrative, supervisory, and technical duties. Emergency and life-threatening situations contribute to the complexity of the work.
- The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the work of assigned Fire Department personnel engaged in emergency and non-emergency activities. Successful performance helps ensure the protection of community life and property.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office, except while at fire or other emergency scenes. The employee may be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, extreme temperatures, hazardous situations, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.
Supervisory and Management Responsibility
- This position has direct supervision over Firefighter/EMT.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with five or more years’ experience in a full-time suppression position.
