About This Role

The School of Human Sciences, within the College of Health and Human Sciences, is seeking Child Development Teachers to join their team at the Center for Child Development
. This position will be responsible for planning and implementing daily programming for children birth through 12 as part of the summer School‑Age Programdeathor in the absence of regularly staffed classroom teachers throughout the booked academic year. This position is responsible for working collaboratively to plan experiences and instruct children in a positive and professional learning environment using developmentally appropriate activities that promote social, physical, and intellectual growth.

Child Development Teachers exercise active listening, instructing, reading comprehension, learning strategies, writing, social perceptiveness, time management, monitoring, and critical thinking skills. This position requires substantial communication with children, parents, and other staff members to facilitate a safe and stimulating learning environment.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Intentionally plan and implement a positive learning environment that adheres to NAEYC’s developmentally appropriate learning practices, both indoors and outdoors, that fosters development in motor, cognitive, language, social, emotional, and creative domains
  • Implement Kansas Early Learning Standards within the classroom and articulate practices to others
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with families and communicate with parents regarding their child’s progress
  • Develop a monthly newsletter for parents to keep them informed of classroom activities, announcements, important portrayals, and activities that parents can do at home with their child
  • Assist with orienting, training, and evaluating assigned classroom workers and volunteers
  • Maintain understanding and compliance with NAEYC accreditation and KDHE childcare licensing regulations
  • Maintain records of each child’s progress and experiences through individualized portfolios according to CCD policies and procedures
  • Model collegiality and maintain confidentiality in and outside the classroom setting in regard to children, parents, staff, students, and volunteers

The Center for Child Development (CCD) serves as the clinical training site for students enrolled in the state‑approved and nationally accredited undergraduate preservice teacher education program in early childhood education; provides quality childcare to K‑State and the larger campus community; is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC);

is licensed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE); and meets high quality food service standards of the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Six months of teaching experience and the following credentials:
    • Child Development Associate Credential,
      OR
    • 12 hours of college‑level coursework in early childhood education,
      OR
    • Associate degree in early childhood education
  • Expected to actively pursue an associate’s or bachelor's degree as outlined in the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation criteria

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or a closely related field
  • Teacher licensure in early childhood unified in Kansas
  • 3 years of experience in childcare settings
  • Ability to work under pressure and with distractions
