Manhattan Surgical Hospital, LLC – Surgical Technician – Operating Room Support
Role & Responsibilities- Select instrumentation appropriate for each procedure.
- Check room for cleanliness and availability of supplies at the beginning of the day.
- Open sterile packs and supplies using the surgeon’s preference card and use supplies conservatively.
- Scrub hands and arms according to the Surgical Hand Scrub policy; don sterile gown and gloves while maintaining sterile technique.
- Set up the back table and mayo stand in reference to the surgeon’s preference card.
- Perform surgical counts with the circulating RN when required.
- Assist with draping of the patient and confirm the operative area.
- Attach light handles and pass appropriate equipment to the circulating RN at the start of the procedure (e.g., bovie, suction, light source, camera).
- Bring the mayo stand and back table to the operating table.
- Participate in the surgical time‑out.
- During the procedure, pass instruments to the surgeon and assistant; maintain awareness of all instruments, needles, sponges, and specimens; keep the mayo stand and back table neat and orderly; communicate openly with coworkers, vendors, and providers.
- Care for surgical specimens following operating room policy and procedure.
- Assist the surgeon with dressings at the end of the procedure.
- Break down the back table, dispose of sharps in an accepted manner, and account for all instruments used in the field.
- Assist with OR room turnover and transfer soiled instruments to the processing room for soaking or washing.
- Keep delicate instruments separate from heavy items; follow universal precautions and BBP standards, always wearing eye protection when scrubbing or inside the contamination area.
- Handle hazardous waste materials properly; assist SPD with instrument reprocessing; notify SPD Team Leader of missing, damaged, or malfunctioning instruments.
- Store unused sterile instruments and supplies; keep the OR room tidy at the end of the day; stock the operating room and notify the OR team leader when supplies need reordering.
- Update preference cards as necessary; pull cases for the next day; assist with monthly cleaning, out dates, and maintain organization of the “back/sterile” hall; keep supplies in an orderly fashion to facilitate inventory.
- Assist with any other duties as deemed necessary.
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or have experience as a Surgical Technician.
- Current CPR and ACLS certification for Registered Nurses.
- Current CPR certification for Licensed Practical Nurse or Surgical Technician.
- Certification preferred but not required for Surgical Technicians.
- Demonstrated ability to stand and/or walk at least five hours per day.
- Demonstrated ability to lift and/or carry over 20 pounds on a regular basis.
- Demonstrated ability to push/pull over 25 pounds on a regular basis.
