During Academy (40 Hour Workweek): $25.35 per hour with EMT / $24.09 per hour without EMT
Post Academy (56 Hour Workweek): $18.11 per hour with EMT / $17.20 per hour without EMT

Summary/Objective
Performs firefighting work in the protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires. The position performs specialized firefighting duties under emergency conditions frequently involving considerable physical danger. Provides emergency medical services, specialized rescue, and hazardous materials response. The position performs public relations, education, and fire prevention/inspection activities, maintenance of the facilities, grounds, apparatus, and equipment.
- Responds to alarms; performs all necessary duties as a firefighter including, but not limited to, the use of hoses, pumps, equipment, emergency apparatus and tools necessary in fire suppression, life safety, rescue operations, property conservation operations, clean‑up projects, and all other activities as required.
- Follows standard policies, procedures, guidelines, and safety rules as outlined in federal, state, and local regulations as well as by the Department for such activities.
- Performs emergency medical services consistent with State and Department guidelines, policy, and protocols.
- Performs specialized rescue, hazardous materials, and aircraft firefighting.
- Attends and participates in formal phased, intensive training and instruction sessions in firefighting, rescue, hazardous material, and emergency medical service methods and operations.
- Participates in pre‑fire planning of buildings and performs inspections of businesses to ensure compliance with fire and building codes.
- Works 24‑hour shift schedules.
- Maintains a sense of readiness to perform high stress, physically demanding duties throughout work shift.
- Maintains personal safety and makes critical decisions in a confused, chaotic, and potentially life‑threatening environment.
- Relies on senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch to help determine the nature of an emergency.
- Ensures that equipment and vehicles are properly maintained to provide for a quick and effective emergency response.
- Contributes to the appearance, cleanliness, and proper maintenance of fire facilities for safety and readiness by performing routine maintenance and cleaning of fire station areas.
- Performs routine housekeeping and maintenance duties at the fire station or in connection with fire equipment.
- Attends meetings and trainings as required.
- Fulfills the ongoing obligations to educate the public on fire safety in the home and at their workplace.
- Maintains records and updates files as required.
- Conduct tours, participate in public education functions, and present to individuals or groups on safety topics and duties of firefighting.
- Serves on committees as required.
- Ensures compliancy with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures in all duties.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must possess and maintain Emergency Medical Technician certification through the State of Kansas or be able to obtain within one (1) year of hire (training provided by MFD).
- Must complete an annual medical exam and be cleared for firefighting duty and respirator use.
- Must pass annual physical performance assessment.
Education and Experience
- Associate degree in firefighting or related field.
- Successful completion of the Department’s Firefighter Academy as well as successfully passing an annual medical exam (including respirator use) and a physical performance assessment.
