Sports officials will officiate Adult Basketball Men’s or Women’s League games to maintain standards of play for applicable competitions facilitated through the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department (MPRD). These leagues run February through April.
Job Duties- Officiate MPRD adult basketball games.
- Attend sport-specific trainings and meetings.
- Make judgements and instruct players on the rules of the game.
- Provide communication to and from coaches and participants.
- Inspect sporting equipment and/or examine participants to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations.
- Work with supervisory staff to ensure accurate setup of the playing surface.
- Maintain a safe and positive playing environment, communicating principles of good sportsmanship
- Establish and maintain effective, professional working relationships with other employees,?department personnel, and the public (participants, parents, etc.).
- Notify, instruct, and correct spectator/participant behavior that is deemed inconsistent with athletic facility rules in a fair, timely, and respectful manner.
- Provide excellent customer service and possess a service philosophy that reflects the MPRD’s mission.
- Assist supervisors, as needed, by helping with tear-down at the end of the game (equipment, etc.)
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Demonstrated ability to learn NFHS Basketball rules and mechanics.
- Concentrate and clearly communicate in situations with multiple distractions.
- Possesses characteristics of a strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Knowledge of NFHS rules and officiating mechanics and signals.
- This is not a KPERS-covered position. As such, employees in this role will not work beyond 999 hours in a calendar year.
- Applicants must pass a background check.
- Seasonal position:
February through April.
