Tool Designer
About This RoleJoin our engineering team as a Tool Designer where you'll use your knowledge in metal forming and tooling to help with quotes, product samples, tool designs, and production needs. You'll design new as well as improve current tools and oversee their build and launch. You'll also work with different teams across the company to provide technical advice on both new and existing products.
WhatYou'll Do Customer Partnership & Product Development
- Collaborate with customer engineers on part feasibility, specifications, tolerances, and manufacturability
- Interpret engineering standards (ASTM, SAE, ISO) and convert customer materials into internal specifications
- Create proposal drawings and determine gauging requirements with Quality Engineers
- Identify drawing exceptions and estimate material usage/run rates
- Calculate and maintain tooling cost models by press group
- Determine optimal internal/external manufacturing processes (washing, packaging, testing, heat treating, plating)
- Execute complete tool designs including 2D/3D CAD, assembly drawings, and component details
- Perform fine blanking and progressive tool design calculations; conduct design reviews with Toolroom, R&D, and Manufacturing
- Participate in tool troubleshooting and maintain comprehensive tool documentation
- Select appropriate press equipment and specify secondary operation tooling
- Develop and maintain tool design standards aligned with internal capabilities
- Redesign machine components for wear/performance issues
- Develop process parameters and identify key control points
- Complete part and gage drawings; order components for tool builds
- Mechanical Design and Engineering Technology degree (completed or in progress), or similar education
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Proficiency in Solid Works CAD
- Experience in AutoCAD
- Experience in Microsoft applications (e.g. Outlook, Excel)
- Work with cutting-edge fine blanking technology and advanced manufacturing processes
