Position: Jury Attendant (Part Time)

Under supervision of the Chief Bailiff, this position supports the mission of the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office by providing quality services that promote and protect the safety, security, and well-being of all the people in our community. The Jury Attendant plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of jury service by assisting jurors throughout the selection process and during their service.

The Jury Attendant acts as a liaison between the Sheriff’s Office, court staff and jurors, ensuring that all procedures are followed and providing a professional, welcoming environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provides juror assistance such as checking in jurors; providing instructions on court procedures, schedules, and expectations; and assisting jurors with completing necessary forms and documents. Addresses questions and concerns from jurors.
  • Provides administrative support such as maintaining accurate records of juror attendance; distributing and collecting materials, including jury summons and questionnaires; and communicating updates or changes in schedules to jurors and court staff.
  • Provides courtroom coordination such as escorting jurors to and from the courtroom and jury deliberation rooms, ensuring juror amenities are provided, and monitoring and upholding the confidentiality and security of the jurors.
  • Provides compliance and security by reporting issues or incidents to the Chief Bailiff or appropriate court personnel, enforcing court rules and protocols regarding juror behavior and confidentiality and collaborates with the Sheriff’s Office to ensure the safety and orderliness of jurors.
  • Promotes a diverse, culturally competent, and respective workplace.
  • Engages positively with both internal and external customers. Communicates and interacts effectively and respectfully with colleagues, supervisors, representatives from other organizations, and the public.
  • Performs the physical and mental demands of the position.
  • Attends work during regularly scheduled hours.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Participates in professional staff development. Participates in training and education opportunities to maintain and improve proficiency. Attends and participates in professional organizations. Associates with employees and departments from other counties and states for collaboration.
  • Performs other related functions as apparent or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or GED
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Post-secondary education
  • Prior experience in a court-related role
  • Proficient in understanding and speaking languages other than English, such as Spanish, Somali, Chinese, Sudanese, and Arabic, among others.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must successfully pass a background check.
  • Must submit to fingerprinting and a check of those fingerprints through the FBI and Minnesota BCA.
  • Must comply with all federal and state laws and organizational and departmental policies and regulations.
  • Must adhere to data practices policies and standards regarding non-public data. Access to non-public data should be strictly limited to what is necessary to fulfill job responsibilities. While accessing these data, the employee should take reasonable steps to prevent unauthorized access by individuals without a work-related reason. Once the work-related purpose is complete, non-public data must be securely stored in accordance with county policies and Minnesota Statutes.

Typical workdays are Monday through Friday with flexible hours structured to meet the needs of the Court System. This position will work a maximum of 14 hours per week or 67 days per year. This position may involve occasional extended hours during high-volume periods.
