Project Engineer, Electric / Controls (RDF) - Entry, Staff, Senior, or Principal Level

Join Xcel Energy as a Project Engineer in the Electric / Controls (RDF) domain and contribute to the development and operation of refuse‑derived fuel projects across multiple sites in the Midwest and West. This role offers a hybrid work schedule with 3 days per week in the office and occasional travel to other project locations.

La Crosse, WI 54601. The position is hybrid (3 days per week in the office) with travel to other sites as required.

Level & Salary
  • Entry Level – Base Salary: $68,300 – $86,500 + 8% Annual Incentive Plan
  • Staff Level – Base Salary: $79,800 – $103,666 + 8% Annual Incentive Plan
  • Senior Level – Base Salary: $94,600 – $126,134 + 10% Annual Incentive Plan
  • Principal Level – Base Salary: $109,300 – $152,766 + 12% Annual Incentive Plan
Position Summary – Entry Level Project Engineer, Electric / Controls / RDF (Refuse‑Derived Fuel)

This entry‑level role focuses on developing technical expertise in specific electrical and controls areas. Responsibilities include working on conventional plans, investigations, surveys, structures, and equipment with limited complexity. The engineer may lead small‑to‑medium, non‑critical projects or provide field oversight for critical projects under higher‑level supervision. Tasks are reviewed for technical soundness and accuracy, and the engineer may supervise or coordinate the work of interns, drafters, craft personnel, technicians, and others.

Responsibilities (Entry)
  • Uses and applies technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques to perform activities of limited scope.
  • Supports the development of technical documentation, including designs, testing, calculations, reports, and standards.
  • Provides ongoing technical support for project activities in Operations, Maintenance, Testing/diagnostics, Regulatory, etc., and may give field engineering oversight for commissioning, testing, inspections, and related activities.
  • Coordinates or leads projects or portions of projects, such as research, design, equipment selection, procurement, installation, and commissioning, under the direction of a higher‑level engineer or supervisor.
  • Supports bid/evaluation processes by performing basic analysis and calculations on existing documentation and materials to aid in bid document preparation.
  • Effectively exchanges information in all formats, both internally and with outside customers/vendors.
  • Coordinates the work of interns, drafters, technicians, and others, providing guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers.
  • May perform budgeting, estimating, forecasting, accounting, and work order management to support engineering projects.
Minimum Requirements (Entry)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum (or recognized equivalency).
  • 0+ years relevant engineering experience.
  • Ability to demonstrate the unique technical skills and core competencies for this engineering level.
  • EIT/FE (Engineer in Training / Fundamentals of Engineering) preferred.
Preferred Qualifications (Entry)
  • Power Plant electric controls engineering experience.
  • Electrical Engineering Degree (BS or MS).
  • Delta

    V controls system experience.
  • Refuse‑Derived Fuel (RDF) experience.
Position Summary – Staff Level Project Engineer, Electric / Controls (RDF)

This staff‑level role demands a broad understanding of engineering principles and the ability to independently determine and develop solutions. The engineer may lead small‑to‑medium or critical projects and provide technical guidance to staff. Frequent inter‑organizational and external customer contact is required.
