The Town is looking to fill its Sustainability and Solid Waste Coordinator position in March 2026, following the retirement of our long-tenured and valued incumbent in the position. Candidates should possess outstanding customer service and problem solving skills, and be a visionary in regards to sustainability practices. The position performs technical and administrative work coordinating the Town’s unit based residential refuse collection service, sustainability initiatives, solid waste, recycling, and waste reduction programs as well as related work as required.

About Us

The Town of Mansfield’s Department of Public Works provides services for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Town’s fleet and infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks, bridges, solid waste facilities, park and recreation areas, athletic fields, sewers and sewer pump stations, and vehicles and equipment. The following departments, divisions, and programs are reflected under Public Works:
Engineering Division which includes sewers, Operations Division which includes equipment maintenance, grounds maintenance, road maintenance, transfer station and tree warden, Solid Waste Division which includes trash and recycling contracted services.

Mansfield, with a population of approximately 26,000, is located in the Northeastern portion of the state, better known as Connecticut’s Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor. Home to the University of Connecticut, Mansfield offers the unique blend of urban (Downtown Storrs – (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). ), suburban, and rural living in a university setting. Mansfield has a variety of cultural and educational offerings, as well as an abundance of natural resources ideal for activities such as hiking, cycling, and kayaking.

Mansfield is a Council-Manager form of government, with the Town Manager serving as the Chief Executive Officer responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Town.

Work Schedule & Location

This position is non-exempt and performs a minimum of 35 hours per week. This position will observe a 4-day work week, Mondays-Thursday. Attendance at evening and weekend meetings and events is required, as needed, to support the work of assigned Town Committees, Commissions, Boards, and departmental operations. The position reports to the Director of Public Works.

The work location is the Audrey Beck Municipal Building, 4 South Eagleville Road, Mansfield, CT 06268.

Compensation

The hourly pay range is $32.47 - $41.03/hr the hiring rate of pay will depend upon the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. The Town of Mansfield provides an extremely competitive benefits package. Training and Experience

An Associate’s degree is required, bachelor’s degree preferred, with major coursework in sustainability, environmental science, natural resources, public administration, or related field supplemented by experience working in the sustainability, solid waste or recycling fields. Consideration will be given to equivalent experience, education, and training. Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of Connecticut.
