Position OverviewThe Correction Officer will maintain control of the institution to provide safety and security of the facility, inmates, staff, and general public by enforcing rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Newly hired officers start at step 1 salary of $24.16 per hour, moving to step 2 salary of $24.86 after six months of employment. Employees working 2nd or 3rd shift receive an additional $0.60 per hour.
Responsibilities- Maintain control of the institution to provide safety and security of the facility, inmates, staff, and general public by enforcing rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Supervise and direct inmate activity in assigned areas of the facility/institution.
- Ensure the assigned area is clean, safe, and secure.
- Monitor and operate security controls, equipment, and computers.
- Operate automotive vehicles in perimeter security and transport inmates.
- Conduct inmate counts, security rounds, and searches.
- Complete required reports and serve on committees.
- Prevent escapes or incidents that threaten security.
- Use physical force, unarmed self‑defense, firearms, or other force when necessary to detain or secure inmates.
- High school diploma or G.E.D.; valid driver’s license required for transportation positions, and a commercial driver’s license required to drive vehicles qualifying as commercial.
- Must successfully pass the correction officer assessment or have completed the assessment within the past 24 months, or be a current ODRC employee previously certified in the position of correction officer.
