Overview
Pet Smart’s Pet Stylist in Training is responsible for engaging with pet parents and their pets while providing positive experiences and best in class salon services. This position will receive training and guidance from our experienced Professional Styling teams, learning from the best in the industry on proper grooming techniques. This role upholds the company’s vision, mission, values, and strategy, and shares responsibility for store cleanliness, recommending solutions for pet parents, and pet safety standards.
The Pet Stylist in Training role is obtained once the associate has successfully completed the Pet Smart Grooming Academy.
- Under supervision, perform the full menu of bath, brush and grooming services and standalone services (e.g., nail trims, teeth brushing, sanitary services) in accordance with Pet Smart’s standards.
- Develop and display safe technical skills to meet or exceed the company’s minimum expectations.
- Recommend additional health and wellness solutions to Pet Parents based on the pet’s needs.
- Ensure a positive pet-parent experience in person, over the phone, and at the sales register.
- Greet pet parents, answer questions, assist with making salon reservations.
- Conduct appointment reminder calls, maintain client records, and consult with pet parents on services offered.
- Handle check-in and check-out procedures for grooming appointments and rebooking as needed.
- Promote salon sales to help achieve targets and other relevant salon metrics.
- Recommend, inform, and sell merchandise and services.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and humane care for all pets in the grooming area; perform end-of-day cleaning per maintenance checklist.
- Take immediate action if a sick/injured pet is identified; transport to the vet as needed.
- Assist in other departments as required; participate in Belonging and Recognition culture and follow all company policies.
- Successful completion of Pet Smart’s Salon Academy training and safety certification program.
- Prior grooming experience preferred; may be required to complete a technical exam.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- Ability to stay composed under pressure.
- Flexible schedule; ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and safety.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Stand, walk, climb a ladder, and use hands to handle, feel, and write; may reach with hands and arms; may stoop, kneel, or crouch; depth perception required; reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100+ pounds occasionally; may involve team lifts.
- Exposure to moving parts, wet environment with pet hair, moderate to high noise levels, and live animals.
