Performs specialized electrical/electronic technical work related to traffic management/control systems, communication, illumination, or traffic data collection devices/systems. The work involves technical expertise in developing, installing, testing, programming, and repairing electrical/electronic devices and systems. It requires working in heavy traffic, after hours, on weekends, and on holidays.

$53,532.00 - $63,721.00 / Annual

Job Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot, install, remove, replace, and repair traffic signal, school flasher, and street light equipment.
  • Inspect traffic signal equipment at operational intersections to ensure signals and school zone flashers are operating as programmed.
  • Respond to trouble calls on equipment malfunctions; identify problems; repair or replace faulty equipment.
  • Properly document trouble calls and problem resolution; assist with inventorying materials and equipment.
  • Program and deploy message boards for special events or emergencies, as needed.
  • Routinely patrol streets to identify traffic signals that may need repair.
  • Perform routine maintenance on traffic control devices and other equipment.
  • Replace damaged parts such as load switches, relays, flashers, batteries, bulbs, heads, and document process.
  • Respond to emergency calls during regular business hours and perform a mandatory rotating after‑hours on‑call duty.
  • Make recommendations and carry out plans with the approval of the supervisor.
  • Train and mentor other signal technicians.
  • Create and maintain daily work records, maintenance history, and work orders.
  • Install and maintain overhead traffic signs that mount on traffic signal poles by using a bucket truck.
  • Flag traffic and install work zone signage and barricades needed to perform work safely at job sites.
  • Implement safety procedures at job sites.
  • May be required to remove debris, fallen trees, and limbs; replace street signs during or after hazardous weather or other emergencies.
  • Regularly and consistently attend assigned work hours.

Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge and ability to follow City policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the common principles, practices, equipment, materials, and methods used in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices.
  • Knowledge of work zone safety requirements and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health rules, regulations, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers and computer‑related software.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Education, Training and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent, and a minimum of 3 years of experience.
  • Must possess a State of Texas Class A CDL Driver’s License.
  • Work Zone Traffic Control Certification.
  • IMSA Signals Level I.
Desired
  • 5+ years of experience.
  • IMSA Signals Level II.
  • Electrician License.
