The Role: The Warehouse Health and Safety Officer is responsible for providing competent health safety and wellbeing advice and support across the designated operational areas within the Shirebrook Distribution Centre.
The role supports the Warehouse Health and Safety Section Manager and the wider Health and Safety Team in implementing the sites Health and Safety Management System by undertaking inspections audits investigations risk assessments and engagement activities to ensure legal compliance reduce operational risk and promote a positive health and safety culture.
Working closely with operational managers engineering facilities HR training teams and colleagues the postholder will provide practical guidance to ensure hazards are identified risks are effectively controlled and continuous improvement opportunities are delivered.
Reporting to the Warehouse Health & Safety Section Manager the role provides professional advice coaching and operational support while helping to achieve site health and safety objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide competent health and safety advice guidance and support to operational managers supervisors and colleagues.
- Support the implementation of the sites Health and Safety Management System.
- Conduct planned workplace inspections audits and assurance activities to monitor compliance and identify improvement opportunities.
- Complete and review suitable and sufficient risk assessments COSHH assessments and Safe Systems of Work.
- Support accident incident near miss and high-potential event investigations identifying immediate underlying and root causes.
- Monitor corrective and preventative actions to ensure actions are completed within agreed timescales.
- Promote hazard reporting near miss reporting and workforce engagement initiatives.
- Deliver toolbox talks safety briefings and awareness campaigns across operational departments.
- Support behavioural safety programmes through coaching observations and positive intervention.
- Monitor compliance with key UK Health and Safety legislation including Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations PUWER LOLER COSHH DSEAR Manual Handling Operations Regulations Work at Height Regulations Workplace (Health Safety and Welfare) Regulations CDM Regulations (where applicable).
- Support operational changes engineering activities warehouse automation projects and facilities works by providing practical health and safety advice.
- Participate in contractor monitoring permit to work compliance and contractor inductions.
- Support occupational health programmes including health surveillance wellbeing initiatives and fitness for work processes.
- Assist with emergency preparedness arrangements including fire safety first aid evacuation exercises and spill response.
- Maintain accurate health and safety records inspection reports audit findings and investigation documentation.
- Produce regular health and safety reports and KPI information for the Health and Safety Section Manager.
- Promote consistent application of safe working standards across all departments and shifts.
- Escalate significant risks and serious non-conformities to the Health and Safety Section Manager without delay.
- Support ISO 45001 internal audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Build positive working relationships across all operational functions to encourage proactive health and safety performance.
- Act as a visible health and safety presence within operational areas providing coaching and practical support to colleagues.
- Exercise Stop Work Authority where there is an immediate danger to persons or a significant breach of health and safety legislation.
Qualifications :
Essential
- NEBOSH General Certificate and Fire Certificate.
- Associate IOSH Membership (AIOSH) or working towards TechIOSH.
- Minimum 2 years experience within a Health and Safety role in warehousing logistics manufacturing or distribution.
- Good knowledge of UK Health and Safety legislation.
- Experience undertaking inspections audits and incident investigations.
- Good understanding of risk assessment and safe systems of work.
Desirable
- Experience of ISO 45001.
- Experience with in automated warehouse operations.
- Experience of contractor management.
- First Aid at Work qualification.
- Fire Warden or Fire Risk Assessment training.
- Experience using Power BI or other reporting systems.
- Project management experience.
