Environmental Engineer, Civil Engineering
Under the direction of the Engineering Department Manager, this position plans, directs, and performs engineering work related to the design, construction, and maintenance of irrigation, domestic, and related facilities, as well as miscellaneous project requests from other divisions and departments within the South San Joaquin Irrigation District. The role involves interaction with contractors, developers, consultants, engineers, and other stakeholders to achieve the objectives set by the Board of Directors.

Distinguishing Characteristics- Senior Engineer:
This is the advanced professional level in the Engineering series. It involves more complex engineering assignments and managerial responsibilities for projects within their area, including providing technical and supervisory guidance to staff. - Associate Engineer:
This is a professional level responsible for major projects and providing engineer’s stamp and signature on drawings in compliance with regulations. - Assistant Engineer:
An entry-level position working under experienced engineers, performing routine duties, and assisting in project design and preparation.
- Design and produce drawings and specifications for water and electrical structures.
- Prepare reports, policies, and recommendations for department management and the Board of Directors.
- Represent the District at public meetings.
- Prepare project RFPs and RFQs, and recommend bid and consultant selections.
- Coordinate with consultants and oversee construction projects.
- Review survey descriptions, parcel, and subdivision maps.
- Assist in budget preparation and monitoring.
- Perform economic and feasibility studies.
- Maintain effective communication within the department and with senior management.
- Perform complex engineering work including system modeling, calculations, studies, and standards development.
- Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory policies.
- Supervise and develop staff, providing feedback and evaluations.
- Manage projects through design and construction phases, including planning, scheduling, and inspection.
- Assist in long-range planning and budgeting.
- Represent the District externally at community and professional meetings.
- Process permits and easements, and prepare cost estimates.
- Assist in maintenance planning and other duties as assigned.
All levels must establish cooperative relationships and communicate effectively. Assistant Engineers should have knowledge of civil engineering principles, while Senior and Associate Engineers should perform complex technical work and have project management skills. Senior Engineers also require knowledge of organizational, administrative, and personnel management principles.
