Overview

medication tech (Healthcare)

Follow the policies and procedures of the facility governing the administering of medications to residents. Note and report errors in the administration of medications. Assist in developing and implementing procedures or programs to determine what medication errors are occurring, when, where, and why, and how they can be prevented.

Responsibilities
  • Perform administrative requirements, such as completing necessary forms, charts, reports, etc., and submit these as required.
  • Maintain productive working relationships with other members of the nursing department, attending physicians, the Medical Director, and pharmacists.
  • Report any complaints or grievances made by residents to the Director of Nursing Services.
  • Participate in facility surveys (inspections) by authorized government agencies as requested by the Administrator or Director of Nursing Services.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance programs, the Pharmaceutical Services Committee, and other facility committees or programs affecting the medication pass and aiming to improve accuracy of the medication process.
  • Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and/or topical medications commonly used in the facility as ordered by the attending physician or Medical Director.
  • Verify that medications brought in by newly admitted residents are examined and identified by the attending physician or facility pharmacy/pharmacist.
  • Follow policies regarding destroying medications; assist under the direction of the facility pharmacist or Director of Nursing Services, including documentation requirements.
  • Follow labeling policies and ensure all medications administered are properly labeled.
  • Follow charting procedures for medications and assist in documenting and removing medications discontinued by the attending physician.
  • Follow procedures governing drug receipt errors, including notifying the delivery source and the Director of Nursing Services; documentation of the drug receipt error must include a written error report signed by an observer/witness and you.
  • Follow procedures in holding medications for residents who are transferred or when the attending physician discontinues medications.
  • Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied as directed; document any instance where prescribed medication is not administered and reasons for refusal.
  • Promptly notify the Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, or Director of Nursing Services of any errors or reactions to medications by residents.
  • Verify the identity of the resident before administering medication.
  • Accurately measure, record, and report residents’ vital signs.
  • Follow procedures allowing residents to self-administer their medications.
  • Be familiar with common medical abbreviations, symbols, and terms used by the facility, pharmacists, and physicians.
  • Attend and participate in continuing education to stay current and maintain certification.
  • Agree not to disclose residents’ protected health information and report suspected violations promptly to the Administrator; report unauthorized attempts to access the facility’s information system.
  • Perform tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures, and as instructed by supervisors; cooperate with interdepartmental and other facility staff to maintain nursing services.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information including protected health information and report any unauthorized disclosure.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Education/

    Experience:

    Must possess at least a high school education or equivalent.
  • Language

    Skills:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business materials; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; ability to present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
  • Mathematical

    Skills:

    Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Reasoning Abilities: Ability to solve practical problems and interpret various instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Must be a licensed Medication Aide with successful completion of a state-approved training program and any necessary examinations per state law.
Physical Demands

The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Prolonged use of a desk top or laptop computer. Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and communicate. Frequent use of office equipment (copier/scanner/fax, telephone, calculator). May assist in evacuating residents during emergencies.
