Basic Function
Under the direction of the Pool Manager, the Assistant Pool Manager will plan, organize, direct and manage aquatic programs which may include one or more of the following: public swim, night swim, lap swim, junior lifeguarding, swim meets, group swim lessons, private swim lessons and other related activities and programs.
Essential Duties- Trains, motivates and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and suggests changes as needed.
- Provides leadership and direction in the development of short- and long-range plans; prepares data for studies, reports and recommendations; coordinates activities and training with other departments and outside agencies as needed.
- Communicates official plans, policies and procedures to supervisor, staff and the general public.
- Determines work procedures and expedites workflow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
- Issues written and oral instructions; assigns duties and examines work for exactness, nearness and conformance to policies and procedures.
- Maintains harmony among workers and resolves grievances; performs or assists subordinates in performing duties; addresses errors and complaints.
- Prepares attendance, accident, incident and routine accounting reports.
- Coordinates staff in the development and implementation of aquatics programs.
- Schedules, prepares and coordinates staff trainings throughout the season.
- Directs the patrolling of the pool and the enforcement of safety rules and regulations.
- Supervises classes, and co-sponsored programs.
- Schedules and runs various aquatics events throughout the season, including lap swim, scuba and junior lifeguarding programs.
- Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phones, typing correspondence, running errands, obtain supplies needed for activities, conducting classes, selling passes, collecting fees; making arrangements for rental and use of pool, helping set up for classes and events.
- Responds to public inquiries about aquatics programs.
- Coordinates special aquatics programs, registers participants, collects fees, and acquires coaches, instructors and assigned lifeguards.
- Oversees the maintenance of the swimming pool. Monitors pool water chemistry through testing of water samples. Maintains maintenance records.
- Aquatics planning and administration.
- The facilities, operations and techniques used in a community aquatics program.
- First Aid, CPR, and Lifeguarding.
- Develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in an aquatics program.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Plan and supervise the work of paid staff and volunteers.
- Report to work every scheduled workday.
Indoor and outdoor work environment with ability to work a flexible work schedule, depending upon program needs, including working evenings, weekends, holidays and shifting assignments as program needs change. The noise level in the work environment can vary, ranging from quiet to loud. Incumbents will work in warm to hot environments with sufficient water, breaks and shade provided.
Physical DemandsStand, walk, sit, kneel, stoop, crouch and swim for prolonged periods; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects and tools and operate motorized equipment. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Incumbents are required to use vision and/or hearing to identify and evaluate field emergencies, and to respond physically to these emergencies quickly and appropriately.
Any combination equivalent to sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS- Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
- Valid work permit if under 18 years of age.
- Valid California driver's license.
- Lifesaving (Red Cross, YMCA or Ellis), and First Aid CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, Title 22 First Aid Certifications are required and must be obtained before the start of the aquatics season.
- Lifeguarding Instructor or Instructor Trainer Certification is desired.
- Satisfactory fingerprint clearance by the Department of Justice.
