ABOUT THE ROLE
The Paving Superintendent is responsible for overseeing daily Asphalt Paving field operations, coordinating with owners and general contractors, and organizing crews and sub-contractors. The Paving Superintendent ensures contracts are completed safely, on time, on budget, in compliance with specifications and customer expectations. The role includes providing accurate revenue and cost information to accounting staff in a timely manner and reviewing invoices and cost reports prior to release.
The Paving Superintendent contributes to developing and maintaining the capabilities of the GVA operations organization to increase construction revenue and profitability, including coaching and mentoring direct reports and promoting a culture of agility, collaboration, and empowerment for continuous improvement. This job description pertains to the following functions in the Paving and Milling business unit.
- Review project contract documents; organize crews, materials; plan, organize and schedule work; and determine cost effectiveness of operations.
- Lay out traffic control plans with third party Traffic Management and Traffic Subcontractors.
- Attend job progress meetings during project execution to ensure compliance with contract specifications, scheduling, and quality standards.
- Consult with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and others to discuss and formulate estimates, organize and manage contracts, and resolve issues.
- Order materials and deliveries when required for the project.
- Participate in stringent Job Cost reviews and provide timely accounting.
- Supervise subcontractor activities and coordinate activities between subcontractors and operations.
- Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas; promote a culture of safety.
- Education
:
Diploma or equivalent from a college or technical school is an asset. - Field of Study Preferred
:
Engineering, Construction Management, or related field. - Required Work Experience
:
Minimum five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. - Required Training/Certifications
:
Any certifications pertaining to Asphalt Laydown or Asphalt Production an asset. - Required Technical Skills
:
Microsoft Suite, Google Suite. - Travel Requirements
: 5% - Good knowledge of paving, asphalt and construction industry and working in a unionized environment.
- Proven team leadership.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret plans and specifications, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
- Ability to effectively present information in writing and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers and the general public.
- Ability to calculate figures such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume; apply basic concepts of algebra and geometry.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
- Strong communication, negotiation and change management skills.
- Independent thinker with a high capacity for working under pressure and stress.
- Adherence to all safety protocols and proper use of Amrize approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including respirators where required; employees wearing respirators must be clean shaven at the seal point to pass fit tests.
- Estimated Wage Range: $110,000 - $118,000 annually.
