Middle School Visual Arts Teacher – 1 year maternity leave (August 27, 2026 to June 30, 2027)

Middle School Principal

Position Rationale and Goal

The teacher is the key element in the School’s ability to promote the social, emotional, and academic well‑being of the students and is the key driver of a school culture that is warm, inviting, and committed to the ideals of the International Baccalaureate Programmes. Consistent with the Ministry of Education and International Baccalaureate Programmes, the teacher works within an established framework for the delivery of educational services which supports the school program.

The teacher ensures that the instructional program is implemented in a way that maximizes learning for all students.

As a Middle School Art Teacher, you will inspire students to develop creativity, technical skills, cultural awareness, and personal expression through visual arts, while aligning teaching practices with the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) framework and the BC Education Plan.

Duties and Responsibilities

Support the Meadowridge mission and vision

Model and encourage a culture in alignment with the IB Learner Profile

Collaborate and maintain a professional relationship with school staff and faculty

Implement IB Programme and BC Education Plan (plan, deliver, assess, and report) for assigned grades and subject areas

Embrace experiential education through the intentional engagement of the head (intellectual), heart (emotional), and hands (physical) into pedagogical practice

Monitor and support students’ academic, emotional, and social growth through our pastoral care program

Nurture each child to discover their own talents, sense of purpose, and sense of self

Build positive relationships with families through regular communication and participation in community engagements

Collaboratively plan and participate in field trips, including overnight trips as assigned

Make an active contribution to our extensive co‑curricular programs, and participate fully in the culture of our Meadowridge community

Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to professional growth and development

Ensure classroom is ready to receive students prior to the start of school each year, including classroom relocations

Assume additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School or delegate

In addition to the general duties of all teachers, the Middle School Art Teacher will:

Design and implement an engaging art curriculum consistent with the IB MYP Visual Arts framework and BC Arts Education curriculum.

Plan, deliver, and assess units of inquiry that integrate concept‑based learning, global contexts, and the IB learner profile.

Foster creativity, innovation, and critical thinking by encouraging students to explore, experiment, and take risks in their artistic practice.

Guide students in the development of a personal artistic process, including investigation, reflection, critique, and exhibition.

Manage and maintain the art studio/classroom environment, ensuring safety, organization of materials, and appropriate use of equipment.

Coordinate and display student artwork in school exhibitions, showcases, and community events.

Support students in preparing art submissions for IB assessments, competitions, and external exhibitions where applicable.

Collaborate with colleagues to design interdisciplinary units that connect visual arts to other subject areas.

Supervise and mentor students in co‑curricular art activities, clubs, or workshops.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a focus in Visual Arts, Fine Arts, or Art Education.

A valid BC Teaching Certificate (or eligibility to obtain).

Experience teaching Middle School art; independent and/or IB school experience preferred.

IB MYP Arts training and/or experience is an asset (or willingness to complete IB professional development).

Proficiency in a wide range of artistic media, including traditional and digital tools.
