Detailed Overview

Supporting the Vision, Values, Purpose and Commitments of Fraser Health including service delivery that is centered around patients/clients/residents and families and under the delegation of the Registered Speech Language Pathologist and within the Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC) Code of Ethics, the Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) implements rehabilitative Speech Language Pathology treatment plans and programs and assists the Registered Speech Language Pathologist in monitoring and evaluating patient’s/resident’s progression.

Responsibilities
  • Administers defined screening protocols for speech, language, and swallowing, without interpretation, selected by the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist.
  • Assists the Registered Speech Language Pathologist during assessments, including, but not limited to, collecting data, assisting with behaviour management techniques, providing positive reinforcement as directed.
  • Assists the Registered Speech Language Pathologist in providing care to clients with dysphagia (e.g., assisting with feeding of patients, demonstrating and practicing compensatory strategies and/or exercises).
  • Follows and implements documented treatment plans or protocols developed by the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist clients in individual and group activities.
  • Provides aspects of treatment to clients as directed by the Registered Speech Language Pathologist. Treatment may include but is not limited to the use of virtual care when the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist identifies clients for this service delivery model.
  • Documents client performance during treatment and reporting the information to the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist. Assists with documentation in compliance with the Documentation & Records Management standard of practice and associated clinical practice guideline as per College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of British Columbia and Fraser Health guidelines.
  • Relays treatment processes (e.g., scheduling, treatment goals and activities, home programming, etc.) to clients with support and approval of the supervising Registered Speech Language Pathologist.
