POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking a self‑motivated and organized Labourer – Waterworks to support the Engineering Operations in the City of Maple Ridge. The incumbent will handle manual maintenance and construction work of varying complexity, requiring skilled and semi‑skilled tasks, sometimes in hazardous conditions. Duties may involve operating machinery such as small hand‑held tools, larger equipment, and assisting various tradespeople.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and materials used in civil construction and municipal maintenance work.
• Ability to understand, carry out, and effectively communicate oral and written instructions from a supervisor.
• Skill in the proper and safe use of a variety of hand and power tools related to the work.
• Ability to keep simple records of the work performed.
• Sufficient physical strength, stamina, and coordination to perform heavy manual outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• Ability to respond to after‑hours emergencies.
• Independence of judgment in performing duties with a minimum of supervision.
• Knowledge of and ability to operate small rollers, a variety of power saws, jack hammers, oil sprayers, vibrators, concrete mixer, and drive light‑duty trucks.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Considerable experience in civil construction and municipal maintenance work. Some training and knowledge in the operation of small power equipment such as saws and rollers.

LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES

Class 5 Driver’s License valid in the Province of British Columbia.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Possession of a valid B.C. Class 3 Driver’s License with air‑brake endorsement or heavy‑equipment operation experience provides added opportunity for advancement.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Interest and ability in dealing with the public, being a self‑starter, and ability to work independently.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The position requires performing a variety of skilled and semi‑skilled manual tasks. May be required to operate equipment, tools, and drive a light truck from the Operations Centre to various job sites. Duties may include performing functions such as pipefitter, pipe layer’s helper, hydrant servicing, and general maintenance of the water system. May also be required to work in the Sewers and Roads division on an as‑needed basis.

This is a temporary full‑time position for approximately six (6) months which may be extended or concluded at any time based on operational needs.
