REPORTS TO: Deputy Public Works Director/City Engineer

EXEMPT STATUS: FLSA Exempt - not eligible for overtime compensation

SALARY RANGE: 2025 Salary Range: $108,286 to $137,017 2026 Salary Range: $111,892 to $141,580 (Includes 3.33% COLA)

The position will be responsible for providing construction management services in conformance with the contract plans and specifications on a variety of construction projects, ensuring that projects are constructed within the scope of the project, on schedule, and within budget.

Responsibilities

Under direction from the City Engineer, the Senior Project Engineer will manage the construction of transportation, surface water, and facility capital projects for the City of Maple Valley.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provides construction management on a variety of construction and installation projects, ensuring that projects are constructed within the scope of the project, on schedule, and within budget
  • Ensures City projects are constructed in conformance with contract documents, Federal and State guidelines, permit requirements, grant funding requirements, City ordinances, and regulations
  • Serves as the City’s project manager for hired consultant teams performing construction management, engineering support during construction, and inspection of City capital projects
  • Provide constructability and value engineering review of construction contract documents, including plans, specifications, and agreements
  • Prepare agenda and conduct pre-construction and weekly construction progress meetings
  • Responsible for project communications between City, contractors, WSDOT, inspectors, engineers, residents, and other project-specific groups such as neighborhood HOAs and residents
  • Provide press releases on construction status and traffic impacts to the community
  • Responsible for facilitating the review of Traffic Control Plans, Request For Information (RFI), Design Change Notes (DCN), shop drawings/submittals, including the contractor's construction schedule and subsequent look-ahead schedules
  • Coordinate with utilities on utility relocation in accordance with franchise and/or construction agreements
  • Responsible for tracking, coordinating, negotiating changes to the construction contracts, and creating/estimating contract change orders
  • Oversee and coordinate all aspects of contract administration requirements on City projects, including but not limited to prevailing wage documentation, apprenticeship requirements, request to sublet work, retainage, and statement of working days
  • Develop and process monthly progress payments and ensure that progress payments are paid within the City’s established payment cutoff date
  • Manage grant reimbursement requests and documentation to ensure adequate cash flow of City funds
  • Provide oversight of construction budget and schedule, including risk review and forecasting
  • Coordinate with City maintenance and inspection staff, Maple Valley Police, King County, and WSDOT on project impacts to long-term maintenance, operation, and enforcement to ensure seamless transfer of infrastructure responsibilities
  • Administer project closeout processes and archiving
  • Ensure that all federal, state, TIB, and City project documentation requirements are met
  • Prepare for, coordinate, and participate in all federal, state, and City audits
  • Assist in the training of inspection and administrative staff in construction management
