The Impact You’ll Make in this RoleThe Automated Inspection and Measurement group develops technology, investigates applications, integrates systems and supports long‑term operations across many 3M divisions in automated inspection, measurement, machine vision, automation, and process data systems.
Responsibilities- Design and develop automated inspection systems using expertise in optics, image processing, and AI
- Implement and support automated inspection systems in a manufacturing environment, including travel to manufacturing locations and on‑call support
- Develop custom inspection and measurement applications emphasizing opto‑mechanical systems, machine vision, and automation
- Analyze current inspection processes and develop plans to improve detection accuracy, stability, and actionable response
- Work within a team setting to solve manufacturing challenges
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Physics, or a science field (completed and verified prior to start)
- Three (3) years of experience in an engineering, manufacturing, or production environment
- Master’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related field
- Experience in process engineering within a manufacturing or industrial setting
- Professional experience implementing automated inspection or machine vision systems
- Experience with 3M custom machine vision platforms, Cognex machine vision platforms, and Zebra machine vision platforms
- Image processing, signal processing, optics, software, or electronics experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication, networking, interpersonal, and leadership skills

Travel:
May include up to 25% US & international, primarily to 3M manufacturing locations.

CompensationApplicable to US Applicants Only:
The expected compensation range for this position is $122,292 – $149,468, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible.
