Observability Architect Collaborate with Innovative 3
Mers Around the World
Choosing where to start and grow your career has a major impact on your professional and personal life, so it’s equally important you know that the company that you choose to work at, and its leaders, will support and guide you. With a wide variety of people, global locations, technologies and products, 3M is a place where you can collaborate with other curious, creative 3
Mers.
As a 3M Observability Architect, you will define how the organization understands the health, performance, and reliability of its technology environment.
You will establish a unified observability strategy across cloud, infrastructure, applications, networks, security, and business-critical services. Using technologies such as Amazon Cloud Watch, Cribl, Splunk, APM, and AI, you will connect fragmented telemetry into actionable insight that helps teams detect issues earlier, troubleshoot faster, and prevent recurring incidents. Design automated root cause investigations using AI technologies to further improve overall observability.
Key Responsibilities- Define the enterprise observability architecture, tools, roadmap, standards, and governance model.
- Integrate monitoring, logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting capabilities across diverse platforms.
- Use Cribl and similar technologies to route, enrich, filter, and control telemetry before it reaches downstream platforms.
- Improve Splunk and Cloud Watch implementations for operational visibility, performance, scalability, and cost efficiency.
- Create reusable patterns for dashboards, alerts, service-health views, and telemetry onboarding.
- Reduce alert fatigue by improving signal quality, ownership, prioritization, and escalation.
- Partner with application, cloud, infrastructure, security, and operations teams to design observability into systems from the beginning.
- Mentor engineers and help teams build the skills needed to operate reliable, observable services.
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Cyber Security (completed and verified prior to start)
- Ten (10) years of experience in IT infrastructure
- Five (5) years of experience with cloud technologies
- Three (3) years of experience with observability
- Three (3) years of experience with AI tools
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
Enterprise Observability ArchitectureProven ability to design observability strategies covering logs, metrics, traces, events, alerts, dashboards, service dependencies, and operational health across complex hybrid environments.
Broad Monitoring Platform ExperienceStrong hands‑on experience with Amazon Cloud Watch, Splunk, and Cribl, plus familiarity with additional application performance monitoring, infrastructure monitoring, network monitoring, Open Telemetry, and incident‑management platforms.
Telemetry Engineering and Data PipelinesExperience collecting, transforming, enriching, routing, and retaining high‑volume telemetry. Must understand data quality, source onboarding, schema consistency, indexing, retention, and cost control.
Cloud, Application, and Infrastructure KnowledgeStrong understanding of AWS workloads, distributed applications, APIs, containers, operating systems, networks, and hybrid infrastructure. Able to determine what should be measured and how failures appear across technology layers.
