This position is responsible for enrolling and completing the training course Level 1 provided by Petsense, “Paragon,” in preparation for a career in grooming and/or bathing. Paragon is a virtual distant learning program where students are guided through a 15-week training program to educate on fundamentals in bathing and grooming, basic safety, pet first aid and CPR, pet handling, dog anatomy and physiology.
The program combines hands-on practice, book work, online exams, videos, and submitting photos of practical application for grading.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance and work scheduled shifts with varied hours, days, nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.
- Support selling initiatives (TEAM): thank the customer, engage with the customer and/or pet, advise products or services, and make the experience memorable.
- Groom Technicians in Training will learn and perform a combination of duties throughout the training program, including:
- Enroll and complete the Paragon Level 1 training within the five-week timeline.
- Safe pet handling; bathing, drying, brushing and combing all coat types; nail trimming; ear cleaning; preparatory hair trimming; basic clipper and finishing techniques.
- Customer service, professionalism, and equipment handling and maintenance.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of animals; inspect animals for external signs of parasites, disease, or injury and report findings to owners.
- Practice safety and sanitization protocols; sanitize and maintain grooming tools and equipment to prevent injury and disease spread.
- Assist in generating business by calling existing and new customers, scheduling appointments, follow-up calls and reminders, and verifying vaccinations.
- Maintain records of all pet clients, including services provided and vaccination records; operate computer as needed.
- Complete documentation for all duties; may perform other duties as assigned.
Experience:
Comfortable working with dogs and cats. Must demonstrate patience and compassion for animals. Must provide own tools (clippers, blades, shears) or be willing to purchase required tools.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Any suitable combination of education and experience will be considered. Regardless of education level, applicants must be able to read, write, and count accurately.
- Operate and use grooming tools and equipment including bathing tubs, brushes, combs, scissors, clippers, dryers, and bathing products such as shampoo and soaps.
- Effective communication with associates and customers; compassionate and detail-oriented approach to animal care.
- Strong problem-solving, basic computer skills, and ability to complete documentation accurately.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to resolve issues ethically and with minimal conflict.
- Typically indoor work with moderate noise; exposure to sharp grooming tools, perfumed shampoos and soaps, pets, and pet waste.
- Exposure to wet conditions when bathing dogs; exposure to cats and dogs of all sizes and temperaments.
- Shifts vary by store; generally no less than 4 hours and may exceed 8 hours.
- Maintain a safe and productive work environment and adhere to safety guidelines.
- Indoor floors and outdoor lots are hard surfaces; lighting and temperature are adequate.
- Ability to move and transfer live animals, equipment, and merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand or move for extended periods; grooming requires physical stamina.
- Ability to perform grooming tasks, lift or reach overhead as needed, and bend, kneel, and squat frequently.
- Ability to operate store equipment (computer, cash register, etc.) and read, write, and count accurately for documentation.
