Urgent and Emergency Care Pharmacy Technician – band 4 to 5 progression

We have a permanent vacancy for a band 4 to 5 progression Clinical Pharmacy Technician to work within Urgent and Emergency Care at Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital, Margate, or William Harvey Hospital, Ashford. This will be confirmed during the interview process.
In this fast‑paced and varied environment your clinical knowledge is constantly developed to provide a patient‑focused medicines management service. You will be working as part of a multi‑disciplinary team, ensuring an excellent service to our patients with safety and well‑being at the forefront.
The role involves regular teaching to other clinicians and healthcare professionals working in the emergency department.
Band 4 – 5 progression: suitable for pharmacy technicians looking to work in the emergency department; newly qualified pharmacy technicians or community pharmacy technicians wishing to start their hospital career. To progress to band 5 the successful applicant must complete the in‑house progression policy and display specialist knowledge in acute and emergency medicine. Mainduties of the job
- Completing detailed medication histories using a multitude of sources to reconcile with current inpatient medications and make interventions where appropriate.
- Administering intravenous and oral medications within scope of practice (training will be provided).
- Counselling patients on new or changed medications to promote compliance.
- Aiding doctors and nurses with medication queries.
- Evidencing suitability of patients' own medications for use whilst in the hospital setting.
- Participating in discharge planning with ward staff and other healthcare professionals, both in secondary and primary care.
- Accuracy checking of dispensed items in the main hospital dispensary or satellite pharmacy within the acute medicines unit.
- Carrying out audits on the department to ensure procedures are followed.

Person specification Qualifications and training- NVQ in Pharmacy Services level 3 with BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent.
- Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
- National accredited checking qualification or evidence of competence.
- Medicines Optimisation Programme or equivalent or evidence of competence.
- Knowledge of commonly used medicines.
- Experience of counselling patients on medication.
- Experience of working within a hospital pharmacy.
- Experience of participating in audits.
- Awareness of and adherence to the Trust's Vision, Mission and Values.
- Knowledge of the audit cycle.
- Experience of writing action plans.
- Member of APTUK.
- Basic understanding of pharmacy practice.
- Good communication skills (verbal, written, electronic).
- Negotiation skills, good interpersonal skills, effective team player.
- Good analytical skills – able to access and abstract data from relevant and sometimes complex sources.
- Able to appraise options and make clear decisions.
- IT skills in word processing, database and spreadsheet packages.
- Baseline management skills – can prioritise work and organise own workload as well as that of junior pharmacy staff.
- Knowledge of JAC system for dispensing, ordering, stock maintenance, etc.
- Utilisation of electronic systems to access patient records.
- Basic understanding of hospital pharmacy practice.
