The estimator is a vital estimating team member and is responsible for the estimating efforts for private and public commercial construction projects. This role involves the preparation of detailed quotes, bids, and proposals, reviewing bid packages before publishing, ensuring the accuracy and competitiveness of bids, and managing the entire bid cycle. The estimator will work closely with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, vendors, and clients to deliver highly accurate, detailed proposals where company overhead is regularly calculated based on company financials and profit is determined by various factors specific to the project.
Project costs are continually evaluated so that actual costs provide feedback to the estimating team, and as needed, changes are based on financial analysis of projects.
Project Analysis:
- Review and interpret project plans, specifications, and other documentation to understand the scope of work.
- Conduct site visits to gather relevant information and assess project conditions.
Cost and Bid Estimation:
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor services.
- Develop and maintain cost databases, historical data, and unit prices for accurate and competitive bidding.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to ensure accurate and comprehensive estimates.
- Attend pre-bid meetings as required.
Risk Management:
- Identify potential risks and opportunities associated with project estimates and propose mitigation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
Reporting and Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and organized records of all estimates, proposals, and related documentation.
- Prepare periodic reports on estimating activities and project status for management review.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform site visits, including climbing ladders, walking on uneven terrain, and working in various weather conditions.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Work Environment:
- Office environment with occasional travel to project sites.
- High-level multitasking is a MUST, with strong retention of information.
- Education/
Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field with 5 years minimum relevant industry experience. - Experience:
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in commercial construction estimating. - Proficiency in takeoff software (e.g., On-screen Takeoff, Fast Pipe, Fast Duct, Bluebeam, Plan Swift), preferred.
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Quick Bid, Heavy Bid, Stack, etc.). Please note that using Excel is not considered relevant experience for this position.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel (for other than estimating purposes).
- Able to effortlessly manage ten or more projects and quickly shift between them without losing accuracy.
