Licensed Surveyor role at Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services.

Position Information

The purpose of this classification is to perform complex and technical topographic and boundary surveys for the County and to supervise surveying staff. This position is located in Cobb DOT Engineering Division.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Organizes, prioritizes and schedules work activities to meet objectives: develops and oversees employee schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations and provide technical expertise; and provides progress and activity reports to division managers and Director.
  • Supervises and conducts land surveys to determine precise location and measurements of points, elevations, lines, areas, and contours; marks points of measurement; measures distance between survey points; places stakes at designated points and drives stakes into ground; cuts/clears brush and trees from line of survey; and maintains related logs and records.
  • Supervises and coordinates the collection, reduction and use of electronic field data: enters data into department software; verifies accuracy and completeness of data; and prepares final plats and topographic surveys in compliance with established standards and regulations.
  • Analyzes survey data: reviews survey details; researches deeds; ensures survey data conforms with deed information; determines property ownership and boundaries; and updates and maintains records as needed.
  • Develops and implements budget for assigned area: recommends operational expenditures, including equipment replacement; monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budget; and prepares and maintains related financial documentation and reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Surveying, Engineering, Geomatics, or related field required; supplemented by three years of experience in surveying; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in transportation and roadway improvement projects.
  • Supervisory experience managing survey staff.
  • Experience using various survey data collectors and equipment such as:
    Robotic Data Collector, Carlson Data Collector, Spectra Precision F50/F30 Robotic Total Station, Leica TCA
    1100, Total Station, GNSS Tablet – Carlson SurvPC GPS unit.
  • Experience using various software such as:
    Micro Station V8i, Bentley InRoads Suite V8i, Listech Liscad.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
  • Must possess and maintain designation as a Registered Licensed Land Surveyor.

Physical Abilities

Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, humidity, rain, traffic hazards, animal/wildlife attacks, or animal bites.
