Overview
The purpose of this classification is to assist in investigations to determine the cause and origin of fires or to support employee concerns and processes related to applicant testing, background investigations, and hiring. The Fire Investigator Technician serves as an entry‑level position and may be assigned to either the Fire Investigations Unit or the Fire Internal Affairs Unit. Participate in training and development: engage in job knowledge training and skill set testing necessary for performing essential duties;
work toward attaining and maintaining all required certifications.
Assist with managing, evaluating, and controlling fire scenes during origin and cause investigations; support senior investigators by collecting and preserving evidence, removing debris, securing and photographing scenes, interviewing witnesses, and assisting with scene diagrams; perform data entry for incident reports and assist with criminal history checks; compile data for media release and track case‑related information through databases; assist with scene activities and help coordinate personnel at post‑incident scenes to ensure safety and evidence preservation.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required, supplemented by vocational or technical training in fire investigations or internal affairs.
- One year of experience as a firefighter or law enforcement officer.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
- Must obtain POST Peace Officer or POST Arson Investigator certification within three years of hire date.
- Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20‑50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental FactorsPerformance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, explosives, water hazards, or disease.
