Medical Tech Degree PRN Microbiology – Wellstar Health System
Job SummaryPerforms clinical laboratory testing under the supervision of supervisors, managers, or directors, exercising independent judgment and responsibility while maintaining equipment, records, and quality assurance activities. Performs teaching and supervisory duties within the laboratory setting. Ensures accuracy, critical thinking, job knowledge, productivity, and communication throughout daily operations.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions- Maintain acceptable accuracy in patient, quality assurance, proficiency, and competency testing.
- Ensure correct specimen identification and meet department error rate standards.
- Document investigations and correct interpretation of QA failures or trends.
- Earn acceptable scores in proficiency testing and personnel competency testing.
- Maintain instrumentation for testing and analyze, investigate, interpret, and report lab data.
- Report lab data accurately within established turnaround times and productivity standards.
- Recognize the relationship between lab data and clinical findings.
- Interpret information from multiple sources and practice information monitoring, investigation, and resolution.
- Comply with pending log procedures, document LIS notifications, and hand off information according to department procedures.
- Adhere to Well Star standards of behavior and take personal responsibility for corrective action.
- Contribute to laboratory performance improvements and inspection readiness, including analysis of new methods, inspection preparation, participation in improvement initiatives, and cost‑efficient work processes.
- Maintain current knowledge of Well Star policies and procedures, LIS, regulatory compliance, safety standards, and participate in meetings, committees, task forces, and project teams.
- Complete monthly, quarterly, or yearly educational requirements.
Minimum Education
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field.
- Med Tech ASCP Certification or Med Technologist (AMT) or Med Technologist (AAB) upon hire.
- MLS (MT) or equivalent from an accredited agency approved by the Georgia Department of Community Health upon hire.
- Less than 1 year laboratory experience (preferred).
- Computer and data entry experience; ability to communicate with various members of the healthcare team.
- Proficiency in Excel, Word, and basic computer operational knowledge.
- Experience with Epic and 3M preferred.
