Aboutthe Role
The Meter Reader reports to the Meter Services Supervisor. This position plays a key role in reading and inspecting gas, electric, and water meters. The job requires extensive walking outdoors, excellent time management, and exceptional flexibility day‑to‑day.
What You’ll Do- Read meters daily or on a special basis, typically at customer premises, and collect service bills.
- Complete cycle readings, assign sequence numbers to new services, and rearrange meter reading routes as necessary.
- Inspect meters and report damage or malfunctions to the supervisor.
- Identify unsafe conditions and clean out meter boxes.
- Use electric, gas, and water meter reading devices, hand tools, and printed materials such as service orders, maps, manuals, and computer printouts.
- Assist in training new meter readers.
- Walk and stand for most of the workday, often for long distances (up to 20 miles per day).
- Work in various weather conditions, including rain, sleet, hail, snow, extreme heat or cold.
- Move objects routinely up to 10 lbs of force, occasionally up to 50 lbs.
- Refer all consumer complaints to the appropriate authorities.
- Provide general information about meter services to customers when applicable.
- Use telephones, tablets, and computers to communicate with customers and supervisors.
Other duties as assigned.
About You Must Haves- Some high school education; age 18 or older.
- Valid driver’s license.
- No prior experience required—employees will be trained.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- At least one year of experience in meter reading or outdoor work.
- Ability to multitask and work independently and as part of a team.
- Exceptional flexibility in daily routines and route scheduling.
- Time‑management skills to complete daily meter reads efficiently.
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with management and customers.
- Professional handling of unhappy or negative customers.
- Attention to detail for problem solving and finding.
- Ability to walk long distances and prepare for weather conditions.
- Drug/alcohol testing is required.
- Required per Non‑Regulatory requirements for employees working with water, electric, and meters.
- Required per Federal DOT regulations for employees working with gas meters.
