Finish Coater Operator

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the safe operation of the roll coater in the prime coating room located on the paint line.
  • Operate the coater in accordance with documented work instructions.
  • Adjust the viscosity of the coating to meet application requirements and those specified on the Product Data sheet by the coatings supplier.
  • Ensure the roll coater is set‑up correctly (rolls installed, paint pumped into the pans, etc.) and in a timely fashion prior to the start of each new shop order.
  • Monitor and adjust the coater equipment (roll speeds, kiss, etc.) as product is processed to maintain product quality and identify potential non‑conformities.
  • Complete clean‑up of the roll coater equipment upon completion of a production order, including removal/changing of rolls, recording of paint usage & drum/batch numbers, etc.
  • Inspect the strip surface and identify non‑conforming surface quality conditions; notify the Paint Line Crew and/or Quality Control when non‑conforming product conditions are detected.
  • Understand and comply with the fundamental principles associated with the Quality and Environmental Management System in place at Metal Coaters of Georgia, Inc.
  • Communicate daily with internal personnel from Maintenance, Production and Quality Control to help resolve problems and achieve company goals.
  • In the event of an abnormal occurrence, if an employee feels uncomfortable, unsure or unable to safely correct an issue, contact a member of plant leadership before attempting to correct the issue.
Environmental Impacts of Prime Coater Operations

The Prime Coater Operator has the potential to release solvents, paints, waste solvent and waste paint into the environment, which could impact the soil, air and water. Releases can occur by spill, open containers, fire and the coater room doors being left open. Surface contamination from spilled paint and/or solvent is the most common impact while performing the daily operations. Caution is required to prevent spills;

when a spill does occur, MCG-527 Spill Response Procedure must be followed.

Qualification Requirements

Education and/or

Experience:

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Language

Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend documents including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and simple correspondence. Ability to communicate information in small group situations to other employees.

Mathematical

Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as fractions and percentages.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense to perform work instructions that are furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to solve problems involving multiple variables in a standard situation.

Other Skills & Abilities: Incumbent is required to use power tools; basic computer (data entry) skills; and ability to recognize metal defects.

Physical Demands: Regularly required to talk or hear; frequently required to walk; occasionally required to stand, sit, bend, stoop, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance. Must be capable of lifting a minimum weight of 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close‑up and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment: Performing near moving mechanical parts; occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme cold or heat. Noise level is moderate.
